NATO's Mechanisms for Screening Journalists and Security Vetting
From Palantir Surveillance to 'Preventive' Arrests — The Corporatization of State Repression in the Shadow of the NATO Summit and the New Ontology of Class Struggle

We must see that the mass arrests and cleanup operation before the NATO Summit in Ankara were not carried out by crude police force alone; behind them stand the most advanced digital surveillance technologies of global capital. While silencing the street, the ruling class operates an algorithmic inquisition mechanism to weed out journalists who might write the truth and to detect "potential threats."
As revolutionaries, let us decode the invisible digital gears of this apparatus of exploitation: how journalists are screened, the role of imperialist software such as Palantir in this process, and the technical-ideological background of security vetting.
How Are Journalists Evaluated at NATO Events? (The Accreditation Filter)
Press freedom at NATO summits is one of the greatest lies of bourgeois democracy. The accreditation process run for journalists who wish to cover the summit is in fact an ideological litmus test and a screening mechanism.
- The "Host Country" Admission: When granting accreditation on a global scale, NATO works directly with the local intelligence mechanisms of sovereign states. Indeed, before the Ankara Summit in June, the NATO Spokesperson's Office openly admitted that "in evaluating journalists and in security for access to the event area, they rely on the intelligence and security reports of the host country (Turkey)."
- Blockade on Dissident Media: As a result of this partnership, accreditation requests from independent and opposition outlets such as Evrensel, BirGün, Cumhuriyet, Halk TV, Sözcü TV, T24, and Medyascope were rejected in advance.
- Legitimacy Calibration (Bona Fide): NATO officially states that it accepts only "bona fide" (good-faith/trustworthy) media organizations. In the capitalist order, "good faith" and "trustworthiness" mean not questioning imperialism's war policies, not probing NATO's bloody past, and submitting to the order of capital. Critical reason is shut out at the door by an algorithmic and bureaucratic wall.
The Digital Guard: Are Palantir and Big Data Software Involved?
Yes—and at the very center of the process. Before us lies not only local police archives but Palantir Technologies, a U.S.-origin artificial intelligence and big-data analytics company that has become the "nervous system" of intelligence agencies and armies worldwide.
NATO holds very large contracts with Palantir to digitize its military and intelligence operations. Indeed, the NATO Communications and Information Agency (NCIA) has directly incorporated the AI-supported Palantir Maven Smart System NATO (MSS NATO) software for use in allied forces' command centers.
So what does Palantir do, and what does it have to do with these arrests?
- Merging Different Databases: Palantir platforms such as Gotham and Foundry merge entirely separate massive data piles—police records, national ID registry data, flight/travel histories, bank transactions, land registry records, and above all social media activity and location (GPS) data—into a single pool.
- Relationship Network Maps (Link Analysis): Palantir performs "data mining" and draws invisible links between individuals. For example, the moment TEMA Foundation volunteers stood beside Doruk Mining workers on a nature trip in Nallıhan instantly enters the system from digital base-station signals (HTS records) or a geographic tag (geo-tag) on social media. When artificial intelligence sees the match "Environmentalists + Workers Seeking Rights," it flags it as a "social risk cluster."
How Are Security Vettings Conducted? (Algorithmic Profiling)
The modern capitalist state no longer conducts security vetting by the old method of "asking the neighborhood headman" alone. The process has been fully converted into a digital Predictive Policing model:

- Open Source Intelligence (OSINT): A single tweet a journalist or human-rights defender posted in the past, a post they liked, or "anti-war" words in an article they wrote are scanned by AI spiders.
- Tree Graphs and the Relative Filter: Not only the person under investigation but first- and second-degree relatives, their circle of friends, and the people they call most often are rendered into an algorithmic tree graph. If there is a "suspicious" contact at any node of this network, the system assigns that person a high risk score.
- Codes That Punish the Future: The ultimate aim of security vetting is hidden in that admission in the prosecutor's arrest referral: "the possibility of carrying out an act." Palantir and similar AI algorithms "predict" from past data whether a person will protest during the NATO Summit. If the system finds a person's dissenting profile high-risk, their accreditation is rejected in advance or they are taken into custody in a "preventive" dawn raid—even if there is no concrete offense against them.
Marxist Assessment: The Transfer of State Functions to Corporations
The digital surveillance and "preventive" arrest spiral that came to the surface on the occasion of the NATO Summit in Ankara offers tremendous theoretical ground for understanding the stage capitalism has reached. What we face is not simply the state using a "subcontractor" or "technological tool" in intelligence activities. What is happening here is the transfer of the state's core sovereign right—the monopoly of violence and control—directly to the digital apparatus of imperialist monopoly capital. Let us analyze this transformation both through concrete information infrastructure and from within Marxist state and philosophy theory.
The Information and Infrastructure Dimension: The Privatization and Monopolization of Intelligence
Capitalism that privatized factories, railways, and ports in a physical sense is now, in this latest crisis phase of neoliberalism, privatizing the apparatus of coercion and intelligence as well.
- Capital-Intelligence Fusion: Palantir Technologies at the center of the process is not a random software company. It is a global monopoly grown with funding from In-Q-Tel, the official investment arm of the CIA, and known for founder Peter Thiel's far-right/libertarian and techno-fascist ideas. Billion-dollar contracts signed between NCIA and Palantir show that Western imperialism has handed its data infrastructure over to this company.
- Transnational Violation of Sovereignty: The "risk analysis" table that lands before a police chief or prosecutor in Ankara is not in fact the product of a local and national mind. Data on where and when TEMA Foundation volunteers stood beside miners, and with which base-station signal, is collected by local security forces, processed on Palantir's servers in the U.S. and Europe, and sent back. The state has rented its right to profile and monitor its own people to the algorithms of global capital. This is the most savage phase of State Monopoly Capitalism in the digital age.
Philosophical and Theoretical Deepening: Reification, Alienation, and the Digital Leviathan
When we put this situation on the table from the standpoint of Marxist philosophy and state theory, we can explain how the illusions of the bourgeois state collapse through three fundamental concepts:
Nicos Poulantzas and the Class Condensation of the State
Poulantzas says the state is not an independent arbiter above classes but rather "the material condensation of class relations." Under normal conditions the state wears the mask of "relative autonomy" to maintain its rule—that is, it appears independent of the bourgeoisie in order to manipulate the working class.
But when software like Palantir integrates directly with the state's coercive apparatus, this mask of "relative autonomy" shatters. Capital has ceased to be an external power giving orders to the state; it has become the state's eye, ear, brain, and algorithmic decision mechanism. The organic distance between state and monopoly capital has been reduced to zero.
Georg Lukács and Digital "Reification"
Lukács defines reification as human relations turning into a relation between things (objects). The tragedy in Ankara is the peak of reification.
- The Abstraction of Humanity: Ms. Tuğba, a TEMA volunteer aged 79, waving to miners seeking their rights is a human, moral, and class act of solidarity.
- Algorithmic Transformation: Palantir's artificial intelligence takes this warm, human act; strips it of emotion, history, and context. It converts it into merely a "data set," a "risk factor" made of zeros and ones. Human relation is reified into the cold output of an algorithm. The state begins to see the citizen before it not as a human being but as a "threat score" in a database.
Karl Marx and "Alienation" in the Political Sphere
Marx, when describing the worker's alienation from the product she produces, says the product stands before the worker as a foreign power that oppresses her. A similar alienation is occurring in the political sphere.
Databases produced with the people's taxes and public resources (national ID numbers, registry records, health data) are processed by the algorithms of imperialist companies and return as a weapon to imprison this same people's children (journalists, academics, environmentalists). Data produced by society turns, in the hands of imperialist monopolies, into a digital muzzle pointed at society.

The New Ontology of Class Struggle and the People's Barricade of Righteousness
Those trying to create a pre-storm silence over Ankara are in fact trying to suppress the echo of their own class fears and deep crises. The chiefs of the global war machine who will set foot in this city on July 7–8, 2026, come with a bloody history of exploitation behind them and the balance sheets of billion-dollar arms monopolies in their hands. Facing them stand the gray-haired TEMA volunteers defending this country's soil, journalists pursuing truth, academics placing science at the people's service, and mining workers marching from hundreds of meters underground to take their rights by force.
This picture symbolizes not the unshakable power of the rulers but a historical and dialectical inevitability: the impotence of the order of capital whose mask has fallen on the new ontological ground of class struggle.
The Revolutionary Subject That Breaks Through Algorithmic Encirclement
The order of capital no longer fights only the "actual" worker who takes to the street, strikes, or raises a banner; with Palantir-supported AI mechanisms it also seeks to colonize the "potential" mode of existence of the working class and its allies—that is, their future. Yet this digital encirclement contains a philosophical and political bankruptcy within itself:
- The Materialization of Data and New Factory Walls: Today data is not an abstract information cloud but one of the most concrete material tools of class struggle. Base signals radiating from our phones, a greeting given to a workers' march, have become a new raw material that the ruling class must seize and use as a weapon against the working class. Struggle now continues not only in the factory but in server rooms and code blocks as well.
- The War Between "Potential" and "Actual": While bourgeois law has historically concerned itself with committed crimes, the arrest of TEMA volunteers in Ankara on the "possibility that they could carry out an act" shows that the state now fears the potential of the class. To eliminate the possibility of a leap in class consciousness, the state bends time, punishing a possible future revolt today and preemptively blocking the channels of social opposition's existence.
- The Bankruptcy of Cyber-Determinism: AI algorithms operate on the illusion that the future is a linear repetition of the past. Yet Marxist dialectics teaches us that social movements advance through sudden qualitative leaps (ruptures). The moment TEMA Ankara Representative Nevzat Özer or 79-year-old engineer Tuğba Kiper greeted the miners is a human and class rupture that artificial intelligence can never formulate. A single greeting can reduce thousands of pages of data analysis to rubbish in a second.
NATO Is Not a Security Umbrella but the Armed Office of Capital
Let us once again refute in the clearest form the bourgeois lie drilled into the person in the street: NATO is not a "charity" or defense pact that protects us from external threats. NATO is a global gendarmerie tasked with protecting property relations of international finance capital on a world scale.
Those who celebrate its arrival today, who arrest their own academics, human-rights journalists, and nature lovers to offer imperialism's blood-stained generals a thornless Ankara, are in fact declaring themselves agents not of the people but of global capital. Those who plan occupations beyond the borders must preemptively paralyze every democratic and class dynamic at home that could obstruct those plans. Dependency on imperialism inevitably produces fascization and hostility to the people at home.
The Dialectical Law of History: Righteousness and legitimacy lie not in the sealed papers of bourgeois courts or in imperialist companies' risk-analysis reports but in the calloused hand of the Doruk Mining worker seeking his rights, in the conscience of the TEMA volunteer protecting Nallıhan's soil, and in the honorable stance of Professor Emel Memiş, who refuses to sell science to capital. Physical force and digital inquisition are temporary; but the people's righteousness fused with class consciousness is lasting and transformative.
What Must Be Done Now? Time to Grow Organized Anger
The ultimate aim of our writings, our analyses, and our words in the street cannot be limited to exposing this rot and algorithmic fascism. It is not enough to interpret the world; one must change it. The way to break this siege is to expand the common front by tearing down the walls of fear and digital fences the rulers want to imprison us within.
Capital's cyber-political guardians think they can end class struggle by reducing the human being to a "risk score." Yet what they forget is this: algorithms can profile slaves but cannot code the will to break their chains. Environmentalists will keep planting saplings but will also recognize the miner's rights as their own. Academics will decode the rulers' lies from their podiums; journalists will not retreat from writing the truth behind the barricades.
They may have tanks, helicopters, the NATO they serve, Palantir software, and a cowardly judiciary mechanism that preemptively imprisons its own people. But we have a righteousness that no cell can contain and organized anger that will overturn this world of exploitation.
Salute to our honorable intellectuals, journalists, and nature defenders in the prisons!
Down with imperialism, down with NATO — long live a fully independent Turkey of labor!
