From Mythos to Praxis: Materialist Philosophy on the Aegean Shores and Humanity's Path to Liberation

Young Comrades!

The Aegean Region is not a mysterious paradise where "miracles" or "Greek genius" suddenly blossomed, as the bourgeois academy and idealist historians of philosophy claim. Bourgeois historiography, when narrating the Ionian shores — the cradle of the Philosophy of Nature and of Materialism — brackets production, slavery, merchant capital, and class struggle; it tells the masses an abstract fairy tale of an "age of reason."

Yet the dialectical and historical materialist method shows us the plain face of truth: The birth of the Philosophy of Nature in Ionia sprang from the intersection of East Mediterranean trade routes, from the qualitative leap in commodity circulation with the invention of money in Lydia, from the colossal surplus product created by the slave mode of production, and from the first historically sharp separation of manual labor from mental labor.

As we tread this geography where dogmatic mythical narratives (the gods of Olympus) gave way to the objective matter of nature (Arkhe), our aim is not to sing romantic elegies over the marble ruins of the past, but to grasp the slave labor in the mortar of those ruins and the materialist/dialectical consciousness that was budding there.

Here is the expanded philosophical and historical materialist itinerary we have prepared for young communists, spanning the Aegean Region as a whole:

Aegean Region Philosophy and Materialism Route for Young Communists

Ancient City of Miletus (Didim / Aydın) — Cradle of Ionian Materialism
What Was Done Here, and Whom Should We Understand?

Miletus is the city where humanity’s first known materialist thinkers — Thales, Anaximander, and Anaximenes — lived. Here began the first attempt to explain the world and the universe not by the will of the gods, but by nature’s own objective matter (Water, the Apeiron, Air).

Philosophical and Materialist Assessment

Miletus was a colossal maritime trade center that founded more than ninety colonies on the Black Sea and the Mediterranean. Thales’s definition of the origin of the universe as water ($H_2O$) is humanity’s first revolutionary leap from mythical ideology toward materialist monism.

Ancient City of Ephesus (Selçuk / İzmir) — Birthplace of the Dialectic
What Was Done Here, and Whom Should We Understand?

Ephesus is the homeland of Heraclitus, regarded as the father of dialectical philosophy. Heraclitus formulated continuous change in the universe, and the unity and struggle of opposites ("You cannot step twice into the same river", "War is the father of all things").

Philosophical and Materialist Assessment

The city of Ephesus was a conflicted place that underwent constant topographical change as alluvium filled its harbor, while at the same time a colossal theocratic finance capital accumulated around the Temple of Artemis. The nature and society Heraclitus observed were not stagnant but in perpetual motion. The principle of the unity and struggle of opposites forms the historical ground of dialectical materialism.

Ancient City of Sardis (Salihli / Manisa) — Birth of Money and the Value-Form
What Was Done Here, and What Took Place?

Sardis, capital of the Lydian Kingdom, is where the first metal coin (electrum) was struck in history and where the market economy made a radical leap.

Philosophical and Materialist Assessment

Sardis is where commodity exchange left primitive barter and was transformed into the general form of value ($C - M - C'$), that is, where "money" — the precondition of capital accumulation — was born. The invention of money objectified human relations and developed the capacity for abstraction in the social mind. Sardis should be visited in order to understand the value-form in the commodity and alienation.

Ancient City of Assos (Behramkale / Çanakkale) — From Idealism to Empirical Inquiry
What Was Done Here, and Whom Should We Understand?

Aristotle, the greatest systematic philosopher of antiquity, came to Assos after leaving Plato’s idealist academy, founded a school of philosophy here, and conducted his first biological/natural observations.

Philosophical and Materialist Assessment

Assos is the station where philosophy broke free from Platonic celestial idealism (the World of Ideas) and turned toward the earth — toward the concrete objective world. Aristotle’s classifications, made by studying sea creatures on the shores of Assos, are the beginning of the empirical natural sciences.

Pergamon Acropolis and Asclepieion (Bergama / İzmir) — Anatomy and the Production of Knowledge
What Was Done Here, and Whom Should We Understand?

Pergamon, with its library of 200,000 volumes, was one of the centers of the accumulation of knowledge, and also the place where Galen (Galenos), one of the greatest materialist physicians in the history of medicine, was trained.

Philosophical and Materialist Assessment

The invention of parchment in Pergamon is the development of the material means of production necessary for the accumulation and transmission of knowledge. Galen’s study of human anatomy while treating wounded gladiators at the Asclepieion shattered the religious superstitions that counted disease as divine punishment and set medical science on the ground of materialist anatomy.

Ancient City of Priene (Söke / Aydın) — Class Organization of Space
What Was Done Here, and What Took Place?

Priene is the best-preserved example of the "grid"-planned city designed by the famous architect and urban planner Hippodamus of Miletus.

Philosophical and Materialist Assessment

Space is not neutral. The grid city plan in Priene is the product of the slave-owning aristocracy’s and the merchant class’s desire to keep social life under control and to spatially segregate artisans and slaves. Urban planning is an instrument of class domination by the slave state order.

Ancient City of Hierapolis (Pamukkale / Denizli) — Stoic Philosophy Born of Slavery
What Was Done Here, and Whom Should We Understand?

Hierapolis is the homeland of Epictetus, one of the most important representatives of Stoic philosophy, born a disabled slave.

Philosophical and Materialist Assessment

Epictetus stamped the history of philosophy with the distinction between "things that are up to us and things that are not up to us." For the masses crushed under the ruthless slave exploitation of the Roman Empire, Stoicism became a kind of ideological shelter and a mechanism of inner resistance.

From the Aegean Shores to the Revolutionary Future — An Epic Call from Passivity to Agency

Young Comrades, Militant Soldiers of Class Consciousness and the Dialectic!

The bourgeois world runs a colossal illusion-apparatus to collar our minds and turn us into helpless, unresponsive passive spectators before the flow of history. Postmodernism’s fairy tales of relativity, the narcotic mirages of consumer culture, and the "harmless" salon philosophy imprisoned in the academy’s crystal palaces are the mythical shackles of the modern age that enslave human consciousness. What they want to teach us is simple: "The world is like this; it cannot be changed; resign yourself to your fate and watch!"

Yet that first great intellectual revolution that erupted on the marble cliffs of the Aegean, at the heart of slave exploitation and commodity circulation, was the first spark of the struggle to take humanity out of being an object of fate (passive) and make it the founding subject of history (active)!

From the Vise of Mythos’s Passivity to the Active Praxis of Logos

Let us remember in the light of historical materialism: Under the tutelage of the Olympian gods, the human being was a helpless victim before nature and the rulers. The human mind that feared the wrath of the gods when the storm broke, that offered sacrifices when famine came, that counted the tyranny of kings and priests as "divine providence," is condemned to a total paralysis of passivity.

What took place on the Aegean shores was not merely an abstract "reasoning"; it was the dialectical leap of human consciousness from passivity to agency!

  • In the agoras of Miletus: As Thales and Anaximander shook the thrones of the gods in the sky, they were crying out: "Thunder is not the anger of Zeus, but the objective motion of matter!" The human being was becoming an active power capable of solving nature’s mystery and intervening in it.

  • In the streets of Ephesus: Heraclitus brought the whip of the dialectic down upon the face of a universe imagined as static and unchanging: "Nothing stands still; everything flows! Conflict and the war of opposites is the mother of all things!" It was here that that historic dialectical discourse echoed, declaring that social hierarchies and kingdoms accepted as immutable are not eternal, that every order carries its opposite in its breast and is doomed to fall.

  • On the shores of Assos and Pergamon: Nature was stripped of being a mysterious temple and made the object of the scalpel and of empirical observation. The human being became not a victim bowing to fate, but an active transformer intervening in anatomy, biology, and the cosmos.

Mythos frightens and passivizes the human being; Logos and Materialism raise consciousness and spur to action! That immortal banner Karl Marx would carry to its peak in the Theses on Feuerbach"The philosophers have only interpreted the world, in various ways; the point, however, is to change it" — is the historical continuation of those first active steps taken in the materialist roots of the Aegean.

Refuse to Remain a Spectator: Hear the Call of Philosophy Teams and Collectives!

Comrades! Philosophy is not a dried museum piece among the marble ruins of antiquity! Philosophy today is the sharpest theoretical weapon in the hands of the class against the bosses’ seizure of surplus-value, against the imperialist war machines of NATO 3.0, against theocratic darkness, and against the capitalist alienation that isolates the human being.

So long as theory does not meet the masses and turn into action, it is condemned to remain a decorative object in the bourgeoisie’s academic libraries. What will free us from being passive spectators is collective reason and organized praxis!

Therefore our call is clear:

Follow without interruption the events, reading groups, and discussion grounds organized by philosophy teams, revolutionary theoretical centers, and communist study workshops; be not passive listeners of these processes, but their active founders and participants!

Against desk-bound academism, against the superficial and narcotic world of social media, against the lies of the bourgeois media, every position opened by philosophy teams must be a revolutionary anvil on which we forge the dialectical materialist method. Gather with your comrades, walk the pages of Capital, discuss the dialectic of nature and society, and with conceptual clarity unravel how the gears of exploitation turn!

The Epic Call: Dawn Will Break with Praxis!

Valiant youth of Anatolia, Thrace, and the Aegean!

The historical line that has passed through these lands watered with the blood of slaves lays a single task upon us: Refuse to be an object of history; be the subject of your own future!

  • Take up that first daring of the Milesian materialists that freed nature from the gods!

  • Sharpen the dialectical sword of Heraclitus of Ephesus that announced the struggle of opposites and change!

  • Fan the torch of scientific socialism that Marx and Engels offered to the working class!

What will tear the darkness capital and imperialism dump upon us is not a dreamy romanticism, but active class consciousness armed with dialectical materialist theory, steeled in philosophy collectives, and put into action in the factories, the streets, and the campuses.

Break the chains of passivity, despair, and bourgeois dreams!

Flood the philosophy workshops and the centers of theoretical action!

The future will belong not to those who merely interpret the world, but to the working class that has become an active subject and thrown itself into the struggle to change it in the light of the dialectic!

Long live Dialectical Materialism!

Long live the Independent Revolutionary Praxis of the Working Class!
