A TKP Reality: Left-Chauvinism and the Limits of Class Struggle

Greetings, Young Comrades!

In recent debates in Turkish politics on the "Framework Law," "negotiation processes," and the resolution of the Kurdish question, the discourses of the Communist Party of Turkey (TKP) and its General Secretary Kemal Okuyan are packaged for the masses as a radical, principled, and "uncompromising communist stance." Viewed from the outside, this line—which does not enter the playing field of those in power and approaches the steps of the bourgeois state with suspicion—can create for young comrades newly entering class struggle a seductive illusion of "orthodoxy" and "principledness."

Yet when we bring the cold scalpel of dialectical materialism down on these discourses, what we find before us is not a class party armed with the revolutionary principles of Marxism-Leninism, but a petty-bourgeois sectarianism cut off from the class, covering oppressor-nation chauvinism with the mask of "love of the class," dreaming of Kemalist restoration, and littered with political blunders that shelve historical materialism.

The aim of this article is, from a consistent revolutionary Marxist stance, to lay before the consciousness of young comrades the dialectical contradictions, historical blunders, class disconnect, and rightward drifts in the ideological language of the TKP and Kemal Okuyan line.

There Is "Class" Talk, No Working Class: Sterile Intellectual Urbanism Cut Off from the Factory

For Marxism-Leninism the party is the most conscious and organized advanced detachment of the working class. A movement that cannot forge organic, practical, and concrete ties with the working class, even if the word "communist" is written in its name, is from the standpoint of historical materialism a petty-bourgeois intellectuals’ club.

The first of TKP’s fundamental dialectical contradictions lies precisely here:

  • Illusion: In every statement the concepts "class," "labor," and "worker" are repeated in exaggerated form.

  • Material Reality: TKP’s social base and organizational map are not industrial basins, factories, mines, and working-class neighborhoods, but the sterile districts of the big cities, university lecture halls, and neighborhood houses.

Cut off from the real class movement, from the dust of the factory, and from the concrete contradictions of the strike grounds, this line falls into the error of substitutionism. Instead of organizing the self-activity of the working class, it produces an "Enlightenment elitism" that speaks in the name of the class. This sterile structure, cut off from the class, is condemned to a harmless, intra-system "cultural leftism" that remains within the limits bourgeois legalism permits.

The "Framework Law" and the New Packaging of Left-Chauvinism

Kemal Okuyan and the TKP leadership reject wholesale, in a blanket language, the legal arrangements and government moves brought onto the agenda on the Kurdish question as "a trap to fortify Erdoğan’s regime" or "part of an imperialist plan."

Let us look closely at the dialectical distortion here:

  • Appearance: It seems as if an "uncompromising" stance is being taken against the steps of the bourgeois state.

  • Essence: Behind the pretext of "not falling into the government’s trap," TKP ignores the most basic democratic, human, and national rights demands of the oppressed Kurdish nation. Under the name of opposing those in power, the legitimate existence of the oppressed national movement and its struggle for equal rights are smeared.

In The Right of Nations to Self-Determination (RNSD), Lenin draws a clear line: Socialists of the oppressor nation cannot be "internationalists" without waging an unrelenting struggle against the chauvinism of their own bourgeoisie and state, and without defending without ifs and buts the equal rights of the oppressed nation.

TKP’s position is the exact opposite of Lenin’s. Reproducing, in a left language, the Turkish ruling bourgeoisie’s sensitivities about "the survival of the state," TKP labels the Kurdish people’s search for rights as "imperialism’s reserve force." This is not Marxism; it is what Vladimir Lenin condemned before history as social-chauvinism (socialist in discourse, oppressor-nation nationalist in practice).

Violation of Historical Materialism: Kemal Okuyan’s Blunders in Political History

Kemal Okuyan and the line he represents, while seeking ideological legitimacy, frequently commit serious materialist ruptures and grave analytical blunders in the field of political history. The inevitable results of reading the history of class struggle not with a Marxist scalpel but with petty-bourgeois Enlightenment-ism and Kemalist romanticism are as follows:

The Blunder of Absolving the State Mind That Murdered the Mustafa Suphis, and Kemalism
  • Blunder / Deviation: Okuyan and TKP publications present the Republic of 1923 as above classes, anti-imperialist, an "incomplete Enlightenment revolution." They brush aside the murder of Mustafa Suphi and fifteen comrades in the Black Sea on the orders of the bourgeois-feudal alliance, the closure of working-class parties under the 1925 Law for the Maintenance of Order (Takrir-i Sükûn), and the assimilationist massacres directed at the Kurdish people as "inevitable birth pains of the bourgeois revolution" or "diverted details."

  • Dialectical Reality: Marxism-Leninism analyzes 1923 as a bourgeois state apparatus founded through the collaboration of the comprador/national bourgeoisie and the landlords, shaped by crushing communists and oppressed peoples. The murder of the Mustafa Suphis is not an "accident"; it is the clear declaration of the class character of the bourgeois state being founded. To write love letters in the name of the "left" to this state and its founding ideology is to become an ideological reserve for the murderers of one’s own historical leaders.

The Mechanical Declaration of Kurdish Dynamics Wholesale as a "NATO/Imperialism Project"
  • Blunder / Deviation: When analyzing political processes in the Middle East, instead of treating oppressed national dynamics with a dialectical approach (with their internal contradictions, class layers, and national demands), Okuyan sinks into the shallowness of "all national demands in the Middle East are the project of Israel and the US."

  • Dialectical Reality: This mechanical approach feeds not dialectics but conspiracy theories. To see an oppressed nation’s struggle for existence and rights merely as a pawn of imperialism is the most typical theoretical cover of oppressor-nation chauvinism. Lenin emphasized that even in the period of the First World War, the movements of oppressed nations, amid imperialist conflicts, objectively carried anti-colonial and progressive potential. Okuyan, by contrast, dresses the official theses of the oppressor state in Marxist rhetoric.

"Enlightenment" Mechanical Secularism and Alienation from Conservative Working-Class Masses
  • Blunder / Deviation: Okuyan’s grasp of secularism rests not on a Marxist analysis of "critique of religion and class unity," but on top-down Kemalist "Enlightenment-ism." Instead of abolishing the economic-social conditions that make religion the opium of the masses, an arrogant intellectual language is used that brands conservative working-class masses as "reactionary."

  • Dialectical Reality: Marx says that the essence of the critique of religion is "the critique of the conditions of exploitation that make the human being groan." Winning a conservative worker to class struggle is possible not by mocking their religious belief, but by showing their common class contradiction with the boss who exploits them. TKP’s secularism discourse is a vast tactical and strategic blunder that drives the conservative section of the working class directly into the arms of the bourgeoisie and of reaction.

The Blurring of Ideological Boundaries: The Risk of Adopting the Symbolic Language of Official Ideology

The concepts used in politics, the discourses, and the symbolic languages foregrounded in mass actions are not neutral. Every symbolic preference carries behind it the historical and ideological baggage of a definite class.

That in its mass actions and publications TKP pushes the universal and independent ideological symbols of the working class into the background while clinging to the official inclusive symbols of the ruling class and of the bourgeois state apparatus is an ideological surrender presented in the packaging of "left-patriotism."

Class Analysis of Ideological Alignment:

In class struggle the task of the proletariat is not to take shelter in the official ideological arguments or symbols the ruling class uses to consolidate the masses. To align around the concepts to which the bourgeois state attributes "sacredness" is to produce consent for the hegemony of the oppressor-nation bourgeoisie.

When the TKP leadership and cadres act out of a concern to "look appealing to broad masses" or to "secure legitimacy," they exhibit the following two dialectical deviations:

  1. Loss of Class Independence (Tailism): Instead of breaking the backward and nationalist prejudices of the masses, adapting to those prejudices is not Marxist leadership but the error of trailing behind the masses (tailism).

  2. Destruction of the Common Class Front: Carrying the official ideological arguments and symbols of the oppressor nation onto the ground of action tells the historically oppressed Kurdish laborer, "we are not with you; we are in harmony with the ideological world of the structure that oppresses you." This practice damages the united class struggle of Turkish and Kurdish workers and the relation of trust between them.

Break from International Solidarity and 1923 Restorationism

The landmark of a Marxist-Leninist stance is proletarian internationalism. The slogan "Workers of all countries, unite!" is not an abstract wish; it is a scientific necessity developed against the universal character of capitalism.

The TKP line has replaced internationalism with a nationalist "left-patriotism." The aspects of this line that cannot make peace with fundamental Marxist principles are as follows:

  • Distortion of the Theory of the State: In The State and Revolution Lenin teaches that the bourgeois state apparatus must be smashed. TKP, by idealizing the bourgeois republic founded in 1923, promises the masses under the slogan "Republic Again" the restoration of the secular, Kemalist, and bureaucratic-bourgeois state structure of 1923.

  • International Isolation: Instead of forging revolutionary and practical ties with the world proletariat and with the oppressed peoples of the region, it follows a line that is inward-looking, afflicted by national borders, and poisoned by oppressor-nation nationalism.

Process Analysis: Comparison of TKP Practice with a Revolutionary Marxist Stance

The qualitative differences between TKP’s theoretical and practical line and a principled Revolutionary Marxist Stance are as follows:

Parameter of AnalysisTKP / Kemal Okuyan LineRevolutionary Marxist Stance
Class Base and TiesA structure cut off from the class, concentrated in sterile districts, universities, and intellectual circles.A line that weaves the practical-legitimate self-organization of the working class in factories, basins, and the street.
Approach to the Kurdish QuestionRejecting RNSD; suppressing the question with the rhetoric of "class brotherhood" and smearing the Kurdish movement.Defending the right of the oppressed nation to self-determination; struggling in practice against oppressor-nation chauvinism.
Historical Analysis and SecularismAffirmation of Kemalism, 1923 restorationism, elitist Enlightenment-ism that excludes working-class masses.Class critique of 1923, the aim of smashing the bourgeois state, class unity that embraces the conservative worker.
Symbols and Ideological LanguageProducing consent for ruling-class hegemony by taking shelter in the symbolic language of official ideology ("Left-Patriotism").Raising the independent class identity of the proletariat and the universal red flag; rejecting bourgeois hegemony.
InternationalismA nationalist/inward-looking line that keeps its distance from the struggle of the peoples of the region.Unrelenting, active, and class solidarity with the world proletariat and oppressed peoples.

A Call to Young Comrades — What Is to Be Done?

Young Comrades,

As you step into class struggle, two paths stand before you:

  1. The First Path (the Path of TKP and Left-Chauvinism): The path of Kemalist prejudices made up with left discourse, of historical blunders that forget the murder of the Mustafa Suphis, of bourgeois statist reflexes, of a mass line that drifts so far right as to take shelter in the language of official ideology in actions, and of intellectual elitism cut off from the class. This path ultimately leads you into the reserve bench of the ruling class and of the bourgeois order.

  2. The Second Path (the Path of a Revolutionary Marxist Stance): The proletarian internationalist path that stands uncompromisingly against oppressor-nation chauvinism, weaves the united revolutionary struggle of Turkish and Kurdish laborers, aims not at the restoration but at the smashing of the bourgeois state, and organizes in factories and industrial basins.

The reality of Kemal Okuyan and TKP is a condensed summary of the ideological diseases the Turkish left has carried from the past to the present (left-chauvinism, legalism, disconnect from the class, violations of historical materialism).

To decipher that line with the scalpel of dialectical materialism is, without sitting at the table of either bourgeois power or the nationalist status quo, to build the independent, revolutionary, and internationalist line of the working class.
