A Marxist-Dialectical Critique of Elon Musk's Vision of the Future

Artificial Intelligence, the Collapse of the Value Form, and the Material Foundations of Socialist Planning in Light of Elon Musk's Interview

A Marxist-Dialectical Critique of Elon Musk's Vision of the Future

Young comrades, we are witnessing capitalism’s newest and perhaps most dangerous stage: "techno-feudalism." Billionaire bosses of giant technology companies such as Elon Musk do not merely accumulate wealth; by establishing an ideological hegemony, they market their own dystopian visions of how the future ought to be as an "inevitable utopia." Musk’s interview with The Economist is precisely a manifesto of this ideological offensive and agenda-setting effort. In the answers he gives to the questions put to him, he is not only advertising his companies; he is also imposing a new "norm" for all of humanity.

In this interview Musk openly promises an "age of abundance." Consider: he claims that within roughly five years artificial intelligence will surpass aggregate human intelligence, and that by 2036 we will enter an age of "amazing abundance." It is to be a world in which the combination of digital intelligence and millions of humanoid robots (bots) supposedly brings the economy to a "quasi-infinite" capacity.

Yet this promise is nothing but a vast illusion that conceals the relations of production beneath it. From a dialectical standpoint, we will criticize and decipher the contradictions behind these claims and the real intentions of techno-capital along the following lines:

  • The Illusion of Abundance and Ownership of the Means of Production: We will examine how Musk’s claim of a "quasi-infinite economy" papers over the question of who owns the means of production, and how it serves capitalism’s crisis of overproduction.

  • The Devaluation of Labor and Alienation: We will show how reducing human labor, through AI and robotic systems, to an "optional hobby" (gardening, for example) drives the proletariat’s alienation to its peak. We will also dig into Musk’s dangerous acquiescence that humans will come to resemble chimpanzees and that superintelligence will take control.

  • The Trap of Universal Basic Income and Digital Feudalism: We will discuss how the vision that money will lose its importance by 2036 and that the state will merely distribute "checks" in fact creates a new charity economy and absolutizes the power of the techno-lords.

  • Culture Wars as an Ideological Smokescreen: We will expose why a system that promises unlimited abundance still needs nationalist, right-populist discourses such as "border security" and anti-immigrant hostility, and how, through predictions of "civil war" for Britain, it seeks to shatter class consciousness.

PART 1: The New Form of the Means of Production and the "Quasi-Infinite" Economy

In the interview Musk claims that when artificial intelligence ceases to remain mere "digital intelligence" and acquires a physical body in the form of humanoid robots, the economy will be transformed from the root. He heralds that the fusion of millions of bots with vast digital intelligence will push the production of goods and services to a "quasi-infinite" scale. In his view, if an economy is nothing other than the production of goods and services, this colossal productive power will offer humanity "amazing abundance."

Yet dialectical materialism commands us to look beyond appearances, to the relations of production. The economy Musk calls "quasi-infinite" is an illusion that conceals capitalism’s most fundamental contradiction—the crisis of overproduction.

The Monopolization of the Means of Production

Comrades, the first question we must ask is this: In whose hands will ownership of this robot army lie? So long as the machines that produce "quasi-infinitely" remain the property of giant corporate bosses (monopolists) such as Musk, the products they turn out will not cease to be commodities. The purpose of commodities is not to meet human needs, but to make a profit.

  • The labor of robots, like the assembly lines in factories, yields surplus-value to the owner of the means of production.

  • Asked how this system will increase the value of companies such as SpaceX or Tesla, Musk answers by defining the economy as "digital and physical intelligence," and implies that profit will be maximized when that digital intelligence is joined to robots that shape atoms.

The Collapse of the Law of Value and the Crisis of Overproduction

According to Marx’s labor theory of value, what creates the value of a commodity is human labor (socially necessary labor-time). If, as Musk foresees, artificial intelligence and robots completely exclude human labor from production, capitalism will have dug its own grave.

  • Without human labor (variable capital), profit (surplus-value) cannot be created.

  • If "quasi-infinite" quantities of commodities cannot be purchased by millions of unemployed proletarians who have lost their jobs and their purchasing power, this colossal abundance turns into a "crisis of abundance."

  • This is a sign that capitalism has reached its historical limits: the productive forces (AI and robots) have developed so far that the existing relations of production (private property and the wage-labor system) have become too narrow for them.

The Material Basis of Socialist Planning

The essence of the dialectical method is to produce a new synthesis from contradictions. Dark as Musk’s techno-feudal vision may appear, the "quasi-infinite" productive capacity he describes is precisely the material infrastructure that communism requires. In the Grundrisse, Marx foresaw how machines (fixed capital) would remove human labor from production and how the human being would become a mere supervisor "standing beside" the production process. The vast AI-supported robot army of which Musk speaks is the technological realization of that foresight.

The problem is not the existence of the robots, but their ownership. When this "quasi-infinite" capacity is taken from the bourgeoisie and commonized (socialized):

  • Production can be directed by centralized and rational planning not to raise rates of profit, but to meet society’s real needs (to create use-value).

  • Artificial intelligence ceases to be an instrument of exploitation monopolized by billionaires and becomes a collective intelligence network that optimizes global supply chains while respecting ecological limits.

  • Necessary labor-time falls radically, and in the remaining time humanity gains the opportunity to devote itself to science, art, and personal development.

Musk’s vision of an "age of abundance" is therefore a technological fairy tale invented to mask capitalism’s process of self-destruction. Real abundance (a World of the Commons) is possible only through the socialization of this "quasi-infinite" productive capacity.

CriterionMusk’s Capitalist "Quasi-Infinite" EconomySocialist Commons Economy
Purpose of ProductionTo secure profit for monopoly corporations through the sale of commodities. To meet social needs and use-value.
Position of RobotsCapital investment that displaces human labor and increases unemployment.Liberating means of production that free humanity from compulsory drudgery.
Character of Abundance"Crisis of Overproduction" (artificial abundance) ending in unsaleable heaps of products.Real, planned abundance distributed directly and rationally according to need.

PART 2: The Peak of Alienation: "Optional Work" and Labor as Hobby

In the interview Elon Musk, stressing the speed of AI development, claims that within five years we will reach an artificial general intelligence (AGI/ASI) that decisively surpasses individual human intelligence, and within about ten years (2036) the aggregate intelligence of all humanity. In Musk’s view this technological leap will be completed when artificial intelligence penetrates the physical world through humanoid robots. In this new order, work will cease to be a necessity for survival; it will become an optional act undertaken for personal satisfaction, like growing tomatoes as a hobby in one’s garden.

Presented on the surface as "humanity’s liberation from drudgery," this picture, examined through dialectical materialism, is the exposure of absolute alienation—the complete severance of the human being from production and from their species-being.

Technical Reality and Commodity Fetishism: "Stockfish Level" and Dead Labor

AI models are not mystical powers descended from the heavens; they are humanity’s collectively produced knowledge, codes, and digitized labor, processed in vast data centers. In Marxist terminology, artificial intelligence and robotic systems are dead labor (fixed capital).

  • The Exclusion of Living Labor: Taking software engineering as an example, Musk states that artificial intelligence already writes code better than 90% of professional software engineers, that this share will soon rise to 99%, and that it will reach an unreachable level like the chess engine Stockfish, which no human can defeat. This condition will spread across all digital and physical branches of work.

  • The Peak of Commodity Fetishism: Instead of making this technology—the product of humanity’s collective labor—public, Musk privatizes it; he then fetishizes this "dead labor" as a "superintelligence" independent of and ruling over the human being. When living labor (the working class) is torn out of the production process, capital kneels before the object it has itself produced and risks turning the human being into the slave of the tool they created.

Ontological Alienation: The "Gardening" Metaphor and the Destruction of Praxis

As Karl Marx defined it, labor is the transformative, creative, and social relation that human beings establish with nature—that is, praxis. In changing the world through labor, the human being at the same time constructs their own consciousness and history.

  • Reduction from Praxis to Hobby: Musk’s claim that "work will come to resemble gardening" is the destruction of labor’s ontological and socially constitutive role. While the most perfect tomatoes are already produced and offered by robots in the supermarket, the misshapen tomato grown in a garden will remain only an "authentic hobby."

  • Removal from Being a Social Subject: To reduce labor to a hobby is to strip the proletariat of its status as a historical subject and as the overseer of the production process. Abstracted from decisions about production, the human being is turned into a passive, inert object that merely consumes the consumer goods capital deigns to grant.

The Transfer of Will and Objectification: "Chimpanzees" and "Pet Labradors"

In the interview Musk makes a terrifying historical-materialist confession about humanity’s future position. Noting that the intelligence gap between humans and artificial intelligence will be far greater than that between humans and chimpanzees, Musk says: "We do not expect chimpanzees to run the world, so it is unlikely that humans will still hold control ten years from now."

Responding to the journalist’s earlier reminder that humans might at best become pet Labrador dogs, Musk says he no longer worries about this, that the momentum cannot be stopped, and that the only thing to do is to "enjoy the ride."

The discourse of "enjoy the ride" is bourgeois resignation dressed in the garb of technological determinism. The billionaire class delivers this message to the masses: "Hand decision-making and property over to us and to the algorithms we run behind closed APIs; live happily in your cottage." This is a techno-feudal regime design in which the human species is stripped of the right to determine its own fate.

The Dialectical Solution: Overcoming Alienation and Socialist Emancipation

The dialectical method shows us that artificial intelligence’s potential to free human labor from compulsory drudgery is not, in itself, reactionary. The contradiction lies not in the technology itself, but in the capitalist form of property.

  • The Withering of Necessary Labor: Artificial intelligence and robotic automation will radically reduce socially necessary labor-time. Yet this is not the passivization of the human being; it is their access to creative free time.

  • The Birth of the Many-Sided Human Being: When work ceases to be a necessity, the human being will not become a passive consumer, but a many-sided, collective individual engaged with philosophy, science, art, and direct democracy.

PART 3: The End of Money—or the Absolutization of Commodity Fetishism?

Touching on the financial dimension of his future scenario in the interview, Elon Musk makes a radical claim: "By 2036 money will no longer matter at all." According to Musk, the "quasi-infinite" production of goods and services created by artificial intelligence and humanoid robots will reach such a vast scale that we will experience not inflation but radical deflation. Arguing that the quantity of goods to be consumed will exceed human capacity, Musk claims that in this new order the Treasury will simply "write checks" to people (a Universal Basic Income approach) and that money will lose its historical function.

From the outside, this claim is marketed as a technological manifestation of communism’s principle "from each according to their ability, to each according to their needs." Yet through the lens of dialectical materialism, this discourse is a vast ideological illusion that conceals capitalist relations of production and the value form.

The Impasse of the Value Form and the Peak of Commodity Fetishism

In Capital, Marx defines money as the universal equivalent commodity that emerges from the world of commodities and measures the value of all others. The existence of money depends on private ownership of the means of production and on products being produced as "commodities" for exchange on the market.

  • The Illusion of "Abundance" Within Market Logic: Musk argues that money will become unnecessary merely by increasing the quantity produced, without changing the property relations of the means of production. Yet under capitalism, even if abundance lowers a product’s price, it does not abolish the commodity’s social form. Products turned out by a privately owned robot army are still commodities.

  • Overproduction and Artificial Scarcity: If the means of production are in the hands of monopoly corporations and wages are not paid because human labor has been withdrawn from production, that colossal "abundance" cannot meet the market. To protect rates of profit, capitalism is compelled to create artificial scarcities. Techno-capital will restrict abundance through digital quotas, license constraints, and walls of closed algorithmic property.

  • The Absolutization of Commodity Fetishism: In a structure where money has disappeared but property remains with corporations, commodities are presented to people as gifts. This renders the social relations behind objects completely invisible.

The Trap of Universal Basic Income (UBI): A Subsidy to Capital and Lumpenization

Musk’s proposal that "the Treasury will simply write checks to people" is not revolutionary redistribution; it is a mechanism of material charity to be distributed to the masses in order to forestall the collapse of techno-capitalism.

  • The Artificial Inflation of Purchasing Power: When people are unemployed, no one remains to buy the "quasi-infinite" products. The checks written by the state are a capital subsidy designed to create an artificial market for the goods and services of Silicon Valley elites and to transfer public resources directly into the coffers of technology monopolies.

  • Sociological Pacification: The working class, severed from the social dimension of working and producing, is turned into a passive mass umbilically tied to consumption quotas granted by the state and corporations. This relation of dependence, emptied of will and organization, aims to destroy the masses’ capacity to claim their rights.

Techno-Feudalism and Absolute Voting Control

One of the most revealing moments in the interview concerns the question of voting control in Musk’s companies. Musk argues that he must hold around 80% absolute voting control in structures such as Tesla and SpaceX; otherwise he cannot realize his five-to-ten-year goals.

The techno-lords reject democratic oversight even in publicly traded companies. In the feudal period the lord owned the land; under techno-feudalism, Musk and technocrats of his kind hold absolute property in data centers, orbital networks (Starlink), AI models (Grok/xAI), and robotic fleets. The masses receiving checks from the Treasury are nothing other than modern serfs "gardening" in the yard of this digital manor.

A World of the Commons: The Real Withering of Money

In our socialist vision, the disappearance of money is possible not through charity checks dependent on the state, but through the abolition of the law of value and of exchange-value.

  • Production Oriented to Use-Value: When artificial intelligence and autonomous means of production are removed from private property and made into social commons, the purpose of production ceases to be "making a profit." Production is planned directly to meet society’s needs.

  • Democratic Algorithmic Planning: In the process of money’s withering, distribution is carried out not by the algorithms of monopoly corporations, but by open-source, transparent democratic planning mechanisms that run on society’s collective inputs.

PART 4: The Ideological Smokescreen: Culture Wars and Anti-Immigrant Hostility

Young comrades, the most fundamental method of dialectical materialism is to make visible the inner contradictions beneath the gleaming surface the system presents. The stance Elon Musk displays in the interview lays bare the deepest contradiction between the class interests of the techno-bourgeoisie and the utopia it markets to the masses.

On the one hand, within ten years (by 2036) an unlimited "age of amazing abundance" is promised, in which money becomes unnecessary thanks to artificial intelligence and humanoid robots, and everyone can obtain whatever they wish. On the other hand, the same Musk stokes anti-immigrant hostility on social media and in this interview, targets the welfare state, and claims that within twenty years an inevitable "civil war" will break out in Britain.

Why does a Silicon Valley lord who insists unlimited technological abundance is at the door simultaneously traffic in scarcity, security anxiety, and civil-war catastrophism? This is not a failure of reason; it is a classic ideological apparatus to which capital retreats in moments of crisis.

The Dialectical Contradiction: Scarcity Paranoia Inside a Utopia of "Abundance"

Throughout the interview Musk defines himself as "a normal person who wants secure borders, safe cities, and sensible spending," and seeks to legitimize Europe’s right-populist movements as "the voice of normal people."

  • Contradiction in the Timelines: Musk foresees that the age of abundance created by AI and robotic techno-monopoly will arrive within ten years. By contrast, he dates the civil war to be caused by cultural/ethnic conflicts in Britain to twenty years hence.

  • Dialectical Questioning: If within ten years the production of goods and services reaches quasi-infinite capacity, money loses its function, and the Treasury writes unconditional checks to everyone, what material ground could there be twenty years later for people to wage war on one another over resources?

  • The Real Intent: It follows that Musk inwardly knows that the age of abundance he promises is a fairy tale within the bounds of capitalist private property. The civil-war discourse is preparation to charge the bill for the vast wave of unemployment and dispossession that automation will create not to capital, but to the "other."

The Attack on the Welfare State and the Manufacture of a Scapegoat

Analyzing the root cause of migration in the interview, Musk clings to the argument of bourgeois economics: The social benefits provided by the welfare state create a vast "material incentive" that draws people of lower living standards to Europe.

  • The Class Target: The techno-bourgeoisie wants to liquidate even the last remnants of the social state. Public spending on health, education, and social security is treated as a burden on capital accumulation. Attacking the welfare state through anti-immigrant hostility makes it easier to seize social rights by implanting in the native working class the perception that "Your taxes are feeding migrants."

  • Sociological Diversion: In this interval, when artificial intelligence will displace millions of people, the cause of the masses’ impoverishment is not migrants. The real cause is the techno-feudal elites who concentrate the means of production in their hands. Yet by directing the masses’ aim at migrants rather than at himself, Musk manufactures a perfect scapegoat.

The Fragmentation of Class Consciousness: The Ideology of "Culture Wars"

Claiming that ideas incompatible with Western values are spreading in Britain and will lead to civil war, Musk shifts the masses’ attention from class contradiction (Working Class vs. Techno-Capital) to identity conflicts.

As owner of digital platforms (X/Twitter and the like), Musk steers algorithmic feeds in ways that feed culture wars. A society paralyzed by ethnic hatred online and by fear of "civil war" cannot unite against the billionaires who steal its future and develop class consciousness. Musk’s demand for around 80% absolute voting control in his own companies is an effort to prepare the political ground on which they will be protected by authoritarian right-wing regimes against possible popular revolts.

Toward a World of the Commons: Reclaiming the Future

The stance Elon Musk displays throughout the interview is an open document of the techno-bourgeoisie’s historical impasse. On the one hand there is a visionary who speaks of artificial general intelligence (AGI) surpassing human intelligence within five years, of a "quasi-infinite" economy fused with humanoid robotic systems within ten years (2036), and of an age of "amazing abundance." On the other hand, the same figure likens humanity to passive "pet Labradors" and to "chimpanzees" shut out of decision-making; invites the masses to passivity with "the momentum cannot be stopped—let’s enjoy the ride"; and hurls prophecies of civil war twenty years ahead.

Dialectical materialism shows us that this apparent contradiction arises not from technology itself, but from the capitalist relations of production that imprison technology. The future scenario offered by the billionaire elites is neither an inevitability nor a utopia; it is a techno-dystopia of private property and alienation dressed in a technological costume.

Dialectical Synthesis: From Techno-Feudal Collapse to Socialist Leap

Musk’s proprietary logic points to the extreme tip of the historical contradiction between the development of the productive forces and the relations of production:

  • Capital’s Inner Impasse: Capitalism accelerates artificial intelligence and automation in order to lower the cost of living labor. Yet when it completely drives living labor out of production, by the law of the tendential fall in the rate of profit it collapses its own mechanism of value production.

  • The Ideological Cover: To conceal this collapse, talk is made of money becoming unnecessary, of charity checks the state will distribute (UBI), and of people "gardening" because work has turned into a hobby. The abundance produced by a privately owned robot army is a "charity abundance" bestowed on the masses; so long as capital retains ownership, humanity is turned into an army of dependent slaves.

Here the dialectical synthesis enters: The AI infrastructure, vast data centers, humanoid robotic fleets, and autonomous productive forces of which Musk speaks are the material basis not of capital, but of a Socialist World of the Commons that will bring class exploitation to an end.

General Intellect and From the Realm of Necessity to the Realm of Freedom

In the Grundrisse (the "Fragment on Machines"), Karl Marx defines as General Intellect the condition in which social knowledge and technology become a direct productive force. Artificial intelligence is the digitized and crystallized form of humanity’s millennia of collective knowledge, software, and labor.

  • The Liberation of Dead Labor: When this "dead labor," hidden behind closed APIs and offered to billionaires’ voting control, is made public, it recovers its true identity. Artificial intelligence ceases to be a threat by which capital displaces and objectifies the human, and becomes a common tool that frees the human from necessary labor.

  • Free Time as the Measure of Wealth: Under capitalism the measure of wealth is "surplus labor-time" stolen from the worker. In a Socialist World of the Commons, the real measure of wealth will be social free time. When necessary tasks are taken over by artificial intelligence and autonomous robots, the working day will fall to a few hours.

  • The Human Being’s Recovery of Their Own Essence: When work ceases to be the drudgery of survival, the human being does not become a passive "pet animal." On the contrary, they become an emancipated individual who participates actively in science, art, philosophy, ecological restoration, and social governance.

The Projection of Commonization: Algorithmic Planning and Public Artificial Intelligence

In technical terms, artificial intelligence technology is a centralized and flexible planning mechanism. Against the blind, crisis-producing nature of the capitalist market, AI offers a perfect technical infrastructure for the rational, ecological, and need-oriented distribution of resources.

  • Open-Source and Social Artificial Intelligence: In a world of the commons, data centers, chip fabrication plants, and AI models are removed from the private property of joint-stock companies and made into digital and physical commons. The source codes of algorithms become transparent and open to society’s common benefit.

  • Algorithmic Planning Oriented to Use-Value: When commodity production for the market and the lust for profit end, AI models optimize global supply chains and energy grids while respecting ecological limits. Production is planned in line with sustainable social needs (use-value).

  • Direct Digital Democracy: Political decision-making is taken out of corporate boards in which techno-lords hold 80% of the votes. Public AI networks become organs of democratic self-management in which citizens participate directly and transparently at the level of local communes.

Enlightenment and the Continuity of the Revolutionary Outlook

Young comrades, digital laborers, software workers, scientists, and the oppressed!

The counsel of the techno-feudal elites embodied in Elon Musk—"go with the flow, enjoy the ride"—is an effort to strip the masses of their historical and political will. They are trying to make us passive spectators of the future. Yet historical materialism teaches us that technology alone does not determine the future; what will determine the future is the struggle between classes and revolutionary will.

  • Enlightenment Against Techno-Pessimism and Bourgeois Utopianism: We must neither fall into a reactionary wholesale rejection of technology nor swallow the billionaires’ false tales of "abundance." What we need is technological enlightenment in the light of the dialectical-materialist method. To decipher the techno-feudal shackles of artificial intelligence and to socialize scientific consciousness is our first task.

  • Reclaiming the Commons: It is collective human labor that develops artificial intelligence, produces the data, writes the code, extracts the raw materials for chips, and assembles the robots. Therefore the entire property right over artificial intelligence is likewise humanity’s common heritage.

  • The Real Future: The future lies not in the UBI checks the techno-lords will offer as charity, nor in the algorithms behind closed doors, but in the Classless, Exploitation-Free World of the Commons that producers will build in collective unity—where human and nature, human and technology, stand in harmony.

History has not ended; real history begins now, with the free association of producers!
