Imperialist Decay, the Crisis of Hegemony, and Class Independence

A Dialectical Critique of Mustafa Yalçıner's Analysis of the US–Iran Crisis

Author: Oğuz Demirkapı
Imperialist Decay, the Crisis of Hegemony, and Class Independence

The postmodern illusions, identity-based distortions, and liberal idealism produced by today's bourgeois world of science and art continually cloud minds. In such a historical conjuncture, the sole virtue of the Marxist philosopher is to blow away the foam on the surface of events and make the world graspable solely through material relations of production, the hard logic of class struggle, and the objective laws of dialectical materialism.

The military aggression, aerial bombardments, and blockade moves escalated in recent times by US imperialism and Zionist Israel against Iran are not an isolated foreign-policy friction. This process is the necessary outcome of the structural crisis into which Western finance capital has fallen, of the law of the falling rate of profit, and of the drive to re-establish global military domination under the concept of NATO 3.0. This new concept (NATO 3.0), which signifies NATO's move beyond North Atlantic borders to bring under control all global trade and energy routes from the Asia-Pacific to the Middle East, aims to encircle the Eurasian bloc represented by China and Russia while laying the Middle East back on the redesign table.

Precisely at this point, the reality of Turkey is neither outside this imperialist equation nor merely a passive victim. The Turkish bourgeoisie, on the one hand, functions as NATO 3.0's strategic fortress in the region and as an inseparable part of its military-industrial machinery; on the other, it seeks to finance its own regional sub-imperialist and expansionist ambitions through these crises. Therefore, a dialectical grasp of the period we are in and a correct period assessment is a vital necessity for preventing the Turkish working class from being annexed to the ruling class's nationalist hysterias or to liberal NATO-ist illusions.

With this historical responsibility, it has become unavoidable to put on the table the article by Mustafa Yalçıner published in the journal Teori ve Eylem under the title The imperialist attack on Iran and what it has shown. While Yalçıner's article carries a correct anti-imperialist reflex in exposing the banditry of American imperialism and rejecting the idealist thesis that "Israel is dragging the US behind it," it has fallen into the fallacy of ethnicizing capital, has missed the dialectic of NATO 3.0 and the inter-imperialist crisis, and has produced serious theoretical weaknesses by blurring the independent proletarian line.

Capital Has No Ethnicity: A Critique of Vulgar Sociology and Idealist Deviation

The method Mustafa Yalçıner resorts to in his article in Teori ve Eylem while explaining the organic bond between US imperialism and the Zionist state of Israel constitutes the heaviest theoretical weakness casting a shadow over the whole of the text. In the text, in order to prove the intertwining of American and Israeli finance capital, the "Jewish origin" of CEOs and founders of technology and finance giants such as Mark Zuckerberg, Larry Page, Sergey Brin, George Soros, Larry Ellison, Michael Bloomberg, and Jan Koum is listed one by one.

Although this attitude is clothed in the guise of an ostensibly anti-Zionist agitation, from the standpoint of the dialectical materialist method and historical class analysis it is an open methodological slide, a crude (vulgar) sociology, and a subjective idealist deviation.

"Personified Capital" and the Objective Laws of Capital's Operation

Karl Marx, in Volume I of Capital, draws the methodological boundaries with exact lines when defining capital and the capitalist:

"Here individuals are dealt with only in so far as they are the personifications of economic categories, embodiments of particular class-relations and class-interests. My standpoint, from which the evolution of the economic formation of society is viewed as a process of natural history, can less than any other make the individual responsible for relations whose creature he socially remains, however much he may subjectively raise himself above them."

Capital is not the gene, culture, or traditional bond of a particular ethnic group, religious community, or race. Capital is value that valorizes itself; it is an objective social relation in which dead labor survives by absorbing living surplus-value.

Whether the top executive (CEO) or major shareholder of a monopoly is Jewish, Christian, Muslim, Buddhist, or atheist does not alter by even a millimeter capital's compulsion to obtain maximum profit, to raise the rate of exploitation, and to swallow other monopolies on the market. Mark Zuckerberg or George Soros, whatever their personal beliefs or genealogies may be, are compelled to act on the market as "personified capital." If a capitalist, contrary to their class interests and the law of maximum profit, tries to take decisions solely out of ethnic/religious sympathy, they are immediately eliminated by competitors under the laws of capitalist competition and driven into bankruptcy.

To tie the operation of capital to persons' biological or cultural origins is to grasp capital not as a relation of production but virtually as a genetic quality transmitted by blood — which falls to the exact opposite pole of Marxism.

Concessions to Petty-Bourgeois Conspiracy Theories and Racist/Chauvinist Illusions

Throughout history the bourgeoisie has offered conspiracy theories to the masses in order to darken the working class's class consciousness and to conceal capitalism's structural crises. Theories of the form "secret Jewish families run the world" or "rationalized finance capital is in the hands of a particular race" have, since the late nineteenth century, been the most fundamental propaganda apparatus of petty-bourgeois antisemitism and fascism.

As August Bebel aptly put it, "Antisemitism is the socialism of fools."

To keep a tally of the owners of technology and finance monopolies as "Jewish-origin" in Yalçıner's article is, even if unintentionally, to carry ideological ammunition to these petty-bourgeois conspiracy theories. In a communist publication, drawing up an "ethnic origin map" of bourgeois individuals instead of the export of finance capital and the laws of monopoly capitalism tears the reader's mind away from dialectical materialism and pushes it toward crude identity politics.

Ethnicizing capital risks putting not the system but a particular "ethnic group" within that system on the target board. Yet the Marxist vision targets Zuckerberg not because he is Jewish, but because he is the owner of a global data-devouring monopoly and a bourgeois who seizes the surplus-value of the working class.

Israel's Existence: Not Ethnic Kinship but an Imperialist Geostrategic Necessity

The source of the unconditional and colossal military/financial support US imperialism gives to Israeli Zionism is not the presence of Jewish-origin executives on the boards of US finance capital. To explain this situation through ethnic relations is to turn the relation of causality upside down (idealism).

The process operates dialectically as follows:

  1. The Need for a Forward Outpost: The Middle East is the center of the world's hydrocarbon (oil and natural gas) reserves and contains within itself the straits that are the jugular veins of global trade — Hormuz, Bab el-Mandeb, Suez.

  2. Military Watchdog: In order to keep this colossal strategic region under control, to suppress the liberation movements of the Arab peoples, and to block rival imperialist centers (the USSR, and today China and Russia), US imperialism has needed a garrison state in the region that it can trust 100% and that is organically dependent upon it.

  3. The Reason for Financial and Military Flows: Israel is for the US an "unsinkable aircraft carrier" planted in West Asia. The billions of dollars in military aid and financial privileges the US transfers to Israel every year are not the "blackmail" or "nepotism of kinship" of an ethnic lobby, but a strategic operational expense paid to protect the global hegemony of American finance capital.

Indeed, the following words spoken years ago by former US President Joe Biden summarize the naked materialist essence of the situation: "If there were not an Israel, we would have to invent an Israel to protect our interests."

Methodological Comparison: The Gulf Between Vulgar Sociology and Dialectical Materialism

The qualitative difference between crude sociology and dialectical materialism in approaching capital and imperialist alliances is clarified in the table below:

Methodological DimensionVulgar Sociology / Idealist Deviation (Yalçıner's Error Line)Dialectical Materialist Approach (Marxist-Leninist Line)
Definition of CapitalCapital is associated with the ethnic, religious, or genealogical (origin) identity of its owners.Capital is a depersonalized, objective relation of production based on the seizure of surplus-value.
Role Within the SystemThe capitalist is seen as a subject who acts with the consciousness of ethnic/religious belonging. The capitalist is a "character mask" (Charaktermaske) compelled by the objective laws of motion of capital.
US–Israel RelationA result of the ethnic solidarity of influential Jewish bourgeoisie and lobbies in the US.A geostrategic product of US imperialism's need to supervise global hegemony, energy, and trade routes.
Method of AnalysisKeeping a biographical and ethnic tally of individuals (individual-centered crude empiricism).Examining the mode of production, models of finance-capital accumulation, and the class character of states (Historical Materialism).
Effect on Class PoliticsClouds class consciousness; leaves the reader open to conspiracy theories and identity-based/racist distortions.Makes the working class grasp that the enemy has no religion/race, and that the real target is the capital order itself.
Without Clarity in Method, No Revolutionary Line Can Be Built in Politics

Mustafa Yalçıner's text, with the crude ethnic determination into which it falls while listing monopoly capital groups, has stepped outside the Marxist method. The communist movement, however well-intentioned or anti-imperialist-packaged it may be, cannot permit the language and analyses of bourgeois ideology and petty-bourgeois antisemitism to seep into our language and analyses.

Capital has no religion, language, race, homeland, or ethnicity. Capital, wherever it is in the world, moves with the same drive: lowest cost, highest exploitation, highest profit.

The bloody partnership US imperialism has forged with Israeli Zionism must be sought not in the genetic codes of capital owners, but in monopoly capitalism's need to repartition the world, to strip the peoples of the Middle East to the bone, and to encircle rival imperialist blocs. Every idealist step taken in method results in practice in the crippling of the proletarian class line. Revolutionary theory can become a sharp sword only to the extent that it is purged of such vulgar deviations.

The US Crisis of Hegemony, NATO 3.0, and the Dialectic of Inter-Imperialist Conflict

In Mustafa Yalçıner's article in Teori ve Eylem, the aggression of US imperialism and Zionist Israel against Iran is related with historical cross-sections; yet the fundamental dynamic behind the crisis is analyzed in a manner deprived of dialectical totality. The text tends at times to reduce the US's moves to Trump's personal "recklessness," to the "ridiculous and comic justifications" he advances, or to an isolated US–Iran tension.

Yet the dialectical materialist method seeks phenomena not in individuals' psychological deviations or in the absurdity of their discourse, but in the structural crisis of the global capitalist system, the necessities of monopoly finance capital, and the intensification of the war for the repartition of the world.

Critique of Personalization: Trump's "Madness," or Capital's Necessity?

V. I. Lenin, in Imperialism, the Highest Stage of Capitalism, proved that imperialism is not a "malevolent policy" of bourgeois politicians but an inevitable and objective stage of monopoly capitalism.

In Yalçıner's article, by giving wide space to Trump's statements, it is emphasized that he "tries to take everyone for fools" and "produces comic justifications." As an element of agitation these discourses can be exposed; but placing individuals at the center in an ideological analysis carries the risk of sliding from dialectical materialism into idealism:

  • Systemic Need: Trump or any other bourgeois representative is a spokesperson for the objective needs of American finance capital. The US's targeting of Iran is not Trump's personal discretion, but the common strategic decision of the entire American bourgeoisie — Republican and Democrat alike. Indeed, the "crippling sanctions" applied under Obama and Bush's declaration of Iran as an "Axis of Evil" rest on the same objective ground.

  • The Tendency of the Rate of Profit to Fall: World capitalism is in a deep organic crisis by virtue of the law of the tendency of the rate of profit to fall as formulated by Marx. Capital is compelled to bring under direct control global hydrocarbon resources (oil and natural gas), strategic raw materials, and shipping corridors in order to overcome the crisis of accumulation and raise rates of surplus-value.

The Dialectical Logic of the Crisis of Hegemony: From "Consent" to Naked Violence

As Gramsci expressed it, the hegemony of an imperialist power rests not only on the apparatus of military force (domination), but on the capacity for economic, cultural, and institutional persuasion (consent). In the "Pax Americana" order it established after the Second World War, US imperialism possessed the capacity to manage world capitalism through the Dollar as the global reserve currency and through institutions such as the World Bank/IMF.

The military aggression we witness today signifies not the absolute power of the US, but on the contrary its hegemonic decline and state of panic:

  1. Collapse of the Capacity for Consent: The US economy, owing to deindustrialization, colossal external debts, and the decline of the Dollar's dominance in global trade (de-dollarization), can no longer offer "consent-based" leadership to world capitalism.

  2. Resort to Naked Military Force: The hegemonic power that cannot produce consent, in a dialectical leap, tries to sustain its hegemony solely through military violence, sanctions, and bandit-like sanctions blockades. The bombardments against Iran and the trampling of international law (even of bourgeois law) are an effort by the US to compensate for its weakening economic consent with military bullying.

The NATO 3.0 Concept: Global Encirclement and Control of the Straits

One of the most vital concepts missing from Yalçıner's article is the new military-political stage into which the Atlantic imperialist bloc has entered — namely the concept of NATO 3.0.

  • NATO 1.0 (Cold War Period): The stage of "containing" the Soviet Union and the socialist bloc and keeping Europe under US supervision.

  • NATO 2.0 (Post–Cold War): With the dissolution of the USSR, the period of "out-of-area" interventions (the Balkans, Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya) and expansion moves into Eastern Europe.

  • NATO 3.0 (Global NATO Stage): A strategy of going beyond North Atlantic borders to bring under control all global trade and energy transit routes from the Asia-Pacific to the Middle East (the Hormuz, Bab el-Mandeb, and Malacca straits). NATO 3.0 is a colossal military-industrial concept that targets not only Russia but, principally, China and its global logistics networks.

The latest attacks by the US and Israel on Iran are nothing other than the acceleration of NATO 3.0's Middle East and West Asia leg. Iran, with its dominance over the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz, sticks a spoke in the wheel of Western imperialism's dictatorship over global energy shipments. The NATO 3.0 strategy aims to bring Iran to heel militarily and politically and thereby secure this critical waterway completely "in the name of global monopoly capital."

The Inter-Imperialist War of Repartition: The China and Russia Factor

One of the greatest methodological limits of Yalçıner's article is that it treats the tension virtually in a vacuum as a binary equation of "US/Israel vs. Iran." Yet in today's world the unipolar American order is cracking and giving way to a bloody inter-imperialist war of repartition.

China and Russia are the imperialist/social-imperialist centers at the other pole of this war of repartition. When the process is examined dialectically, the following objective realities emerge:

  • Iran's Position: Iran is not a passive, innocent victim of imperialism. The Iranian ruling class, while crushing its own people on the one hand, is on the other a strategic bridge of Chinese imperialism's "Belt and Road Initiative" and Russia's most important military-political ally in the Middle East/Caucasus. China supplies a colossal portion of its oil needs from Iran and, by bypassing sanctions, binds the Iranian economy to its own model of capital accumulation.

  • From Proxy War to Direct Conflict: The US's striking of Iran is directly a move to cut the logistics and energy arteries of Chinese imperialism. Weakening Iran means paralyzing China's sphere of influence in the Middle East and breaking Russia's southern front.

To detach the war from the context of inter-imperialist rivalry and read it merely as "imperialism's attack on an oppressed country" carries the risk of generating in the reader a sympathy for Chinese or Russian imperialism (the "multipolarity illusion"). The Marxist vision holds that the working class's attitude in the quarrel between these two imperialist blocs must be independent on the principle of "neither Atlantic nor Eurasia."

Comparative Analysis Table

The table below clearly sets out the methodological difference between a superficial/idealist analysis and a dialectical materialist grasp in approaching the US–Iran crisis and global tension:

Dimension of AnalysisSuperficial / Reductionist Approach (Weaknesses in Yalçıner's Article)Dialectical Materialist Analysis (Developed Marxist Vision)
Cause of the AttackTrump's recklessness, personal aggression, and "comic" justifications.Capitalism's structural crisis, falling rates of profit, and finance capital's need for markets.
State of HegemonyThe absolute power of the US and its desire to run the world alone. An organic crisis of hegemony in which the US, unable to produce "consent," resorts to naked military force.
Military StrategyAn isolated occupation/destruction operation by the US and Israel against a regional country.Bringing global energy and trade corridors under control within the NATO 3.0 concept.
Regional EquationOnly the duality of "US/Israeli aggression vs. the oppressed Iranian people."The global inter-imperialist struggle for repartition between the US/NATO bloc and the China/Russia bloc.
Iran's RoleMerely an object / victim country targeted by imperialism.A regional actor with its own bourgeois interests, articulated to the China/Russia bloc.
Revolutionary TaskAnti-imperialism limited to exposing only US/Israeli aggression.Transforming imperialist war into internal class war; not being annexed to any imperialist camp (Atlantic/Eurasia).

While Mustafa Yalçıner's article carries agitational value in exposing the bullying of the US and Israel, it has remained shallow at the point of grasping the global crisis of hegemony, the strategic logic of NATO 3.0, and the dialectic of inter-imperialist contradictions.

A Marxist who wishes to read today's world correctly cannot see the recklessness of the US merely as the personal madness of a leader. What stands before us is the final thrashing of monopoly capitalism — rotting, having lost the capacity to produce consent, its Dollar dominion shaken, and therefore donning the armor of NATO 3.0 and dragging the world into a bloody war.

Against this thrashing, the revolutionary proletarian line, while standing up to imperialist missiles, grants no credit either to the reactionary anti-imperialist rhetoric of the Mullah regime or to the "multipolar world" fairy tales of the China/Russia bloc. Genuine anti-imperialism is the independent class struggle that will tear out monopoly capitalism and its regional collaborators by the root.

The Class Character of the Iranian Regime, the Illusion of the "Axis of Resistance," and the Independent Proletarian Line

In Mustafa Yalçıner's article in Teori ve Eylem, the disasters created by US embargoes and Israeli bombardments upon the Iranian people are rightly emphasized; yet when it comes to defining the class nature of the Iranian state and the proletarian attitude toward this regime, the text surrenders to a serious ambiguity. In the article, the regime's "cruelty" and "despotic attitude" are mentioned in parentheses, as if brushed aside; but the state's place within material relations of production and which class's dictatorship it is is not set out with dialectical clarity.

For a revolutionary Marxist, opposing imperialist aggression under no circumstances requires acquitting the reactionary ruling class of the targeted country or covering up its class character. On the contrary, principled anti-imperialism is possible only and solely through the construction of an independent proletarian line that has completely broken, ideologically and politically, from the local bourgeoisie.

The Reality Behind the Curtain: Theocratic-Bureaucratic Bourgeois Dictatorship

The Iranian state is not, as claimed, a "popular" or "progressive" anti-imperialist fortress defending the people's interests against imperialism. The Islamic Republic, founded upon the bloody suppression of workers' councils (Shuras) after the 1979 Revolution and the physical liquidation of left and communist movements, is the dictatorship of the bureaucratic-theocratic bourgeoisie and comprador capitalists.

When we examine production relations and class structure in Iran, the following objective realities confront us:

  • The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (Pasdaran) and Capital Accumulation: The Pasdaran is not merely a military force; it is a colossal financial-military monopoly holding the construction, telecommunications, oil, mining, and smuggling sectors. A significant portion of the Iranian economy is under the direct supervision of this military-bureaucratic bourgeoisie.

  • Religious Foundations (Bonyads) and Exemptions: Theocratic holdings called Bonyads control a colossal portion of the country's GDP and, exempted from all taxes and oversight, seize the surplus-value produced by the working class.

  • The Bloody Suppression of Class Struggle: The Iranian regime is a reactionary bourgeois regime that bans independent unions, flogs and executes striking workers, shoots the masses who take to the streets against price hikes and poverty, and uses feudal-medieval patriarchal oppression over women as an apparatus of class discipline.

Therefore, the conflict between the Iranian regime and American imperialism is not a conflict between socialism and capitalism, or between an oppressed people and a state defending the oppressed. This conflict is a conflict between global monopoly capitalism and a theocratic bourgeois regime trying to protect its own national market and regional sphere of influence.

The Demagogy of the "Axis of Resistance" Myth and Sub-Imperialist Ambitions

In Yalçıner's article, the structure called the "Shiite Crescent" or "Axis of Resistance" is mentioned, yet no class analysis of this axis is conducted. Yet dialectical materialism is obliged to expose the class essence beneath such religious or geopolitical packaging.

This line, at the center of which stand elements such as Hezbollah, Hamas, Hashd al-Shaabi, and Ansar Allah (the Houthis), has no proletarian or anti-capitalist character. These centers are bourgeois–petty-bourgeois religious nationalist movements; they are instruments of the Iranian ruling class for increasing its regional market share in the Middle East, expanding its own sub-imperialist sphere of influence, and obtaining geopolitical leverage on behalf of the China/Russia bloc.

The Iranian bourgeoisie has poisoned the revolutionary potential of the laboring peoples in Iraq, Syria, Yemen, and Lebanon with sectarian ideology, prevented the development of class consciousness, and turned the peoples of the region into pawns of proxy wars for its own class interests. The discourse of the "Axis of Resistance" is nothing but an ideological veil concealing the exploitation of the Iranian working class and the peoples of the region to the bone.

Critique of Two Deviations: "Campism" and the "Left-Liberal" Imperialist Illusion

In periods of imperialist crisis and war, two fundamental right and left opportunist tendencies emerge that deviate from the Marxist line. Yalçıner's text fails to erect a clear barricade against either of these deviations:

The Campist (Social-Chauvinist) Deviation

This tendency divides the world into only an "imperialist bloc" and an "anti-imperialist bloc." It declares every regime standing against the US and Israel (the Iranian mullahs, Assad, Putin, etc.) automatically to be "anti-imperialist forces" that must be supported.

  • Marxist Critique: This approach is an updated form of the attitude Lenin condemned as social-chauvinism. Acquitting one's own country's or region's bourgeoisie and lining the working class up behind a theocratic dictatorship is betrayal of communist principles. The shallowness of "my enemy's enemy is my friend" is not dialectical but a pragmatist bourgeois logic.
The Left-Liberal / NATO-ist Deviation

This tendency, starting from the cruelty, misogyny, and anti-democratic structure of the Iranian regime, tacitly or openly affirms US/NATO intervention, sanctions, or "regime change" operations. With the understanding of "let the mullahs go, however they go," it expects "democracy" from imperialist bombs.

  • Marxist Critique: This approach is the trap of bourgeois humanism and left-liberalism. The examples of Iraq, Libya, Afghanistan, and Syria have clearly shown that the "regime change" brought by imperialism is not democracy but the plunder of the country, the looting of national resources, sectarian wars, and the complete crushing of the working class.
Lenin's Double Rejection and the Independent Proletarian Line (CIPOML Line)

V. I. Lenin, while determining the attitude toward imperialist war during the First World War, formulated the principles of "Revolutionary Defeatism" and "Class Independence." The same approach is valid today against imperialism's encirclement of Iran.

The revolutionary proletarian line (the CIPOML line) takes as its basis a dialectical double rejection:

  1. Unconditional Attitude Against Imperialist Intervention: Every bombardment, military intervention, economic embargo, and imposition of regime change by the US and Israel against Iran is opposed without reservation or condition. Imperialism is the chief enemy of oppressed nations.

  2. Class War Against the Local Bourgeoisie: While standing against imperialism, not a millimeter of ideological/political support is given to the Iranian Mullah regime, the theocratic bourgeoisie, and its regional extensions.

The task of changing the regime and overthrowing theocracy belongs not to American missiles or Zionist occupiers, but to the revolutionary struggle of the Iranian working class, women, and oppressed peoples. The anti-imperialist struggle is waged not for the survival of the Mullahs, but for the Socialist Revolution that will overthrow theocratic dictatorship and establish the Dictatorship of the Proletariat.

Comparative Analysis Table: Exposing Three Different Lines

The table below clearly summarizes the class essence of the ideological tendencies that emerge in the face of the Iran–US crisis and the difference of the Marxist-Leninist independent line:

Ideological Line / CurrentView of the Iranian Regime (the Mullahs)View of US/Israeli ImperialismWhose Task Is Regime Change?Class Outcome and Function
Campist / Social-Chauvinist Line (Right Opportunism)Seen as an "anti-imperialist fortress"; internal repression is swept under the rug.Seen as the main enemy; yet struggle is conducted by being annexed to the local bourgeoisie. The regime must be protected; internal class struggle is deferred.Tails the working class behind the theocratic bourgeoisie; paralyzes class consciousness.
Left-Liberal / NATO-ist Line (Left Opportunism)"Demonized"; even imperialist sanctions are legitimized in order to be rid of the regime.Tacitly/openly affirmed as the "lesser evil" or "exporter of democracy."Imperialist intervention, externally backed opposition, or NATO military bullying.Makes the working class a reserve force of imperialism; serves the colonization of the country.
Revolutionary Proletarian Line (CIPOML / Marxism-Leninism)Exposed as a reactionary, theocratic-bureaucratic bourgeois dictatorship. The chief monopolistic enemy of oppressed peoples; its aggression is opposed unconditionally. The Iranian Working Class and Oppressed (Independent Mass Movement and Revolution).Ensures the ideological and organizational independence of the working class; links anti-imperialism to socialism.

Mustafa Yalçıner's article is a correct first step at the point of condemning the banditry of the US; yet because it cannot clarify the class nature of the Iranian state and cannot openly draw the independent proletarian line, it is theoretically incomplete and open to losing its direction.

Marxist philosophy is neither a shallow passivity floundering amid dialectical contradictions nor a pragmatism of choosing one of the bourgeois cliques. The Iranian people cannot be forced into a choice between American missiles and Mullah whips. The task of revolutionary communists is to teach the working class to raise its own independent class banner against these two reactionary forces; to transform anti-imperialist defense into an uninterrupted revolutionary class war that will overthrow the theocratic bourgeoisie.

The Dialectical Matrix of Contradictions and the Methodological Application of Contradiction Theory

The heart of dialectical materialist philosophy is the concept of contradiction. As V. I. Lenin emphasized in the Philosophical Notebooks: "Dialectics in the proper sense is the study of contradiction in the very essence of objects." Mustafa Yalçıner's article in Teori ve Eylem, while trying to analyze a complex, multilayered, and dynamic geopolitical rupture, has mixed up the objective categories of dialectical contradiction theory (fundamental contradiction, principal contradiction, internal/external contradiction, antagonistic contradiction), and this has necessarily led to ambiguity in political conclusions.

Formal logic (bourgeois formal logic) treats phenomena with the duality of "either A or B": Either you are on the side of American imperialism or on the side of the Iranian Mullah regime. The dialectical method smashes this shallow vise of formal logic. Dialectics, in accordance with the law of the unity and struggle of opposites, shows how more than one contradiction is intertwined at once within a single case, which of these contradictions is determining (principal), and how one situation transforms into another.

The current crisis escalating in the Middle East is a multilayered tangle of contradictions. To untangle this knot correctly, we must pass the categories of contradiction one by one through a dialectical filter.

The Dialectic of Internal and External Contradiction: The Basis and Condition of Change

One of the most fundamental dialectical principles formulated by Mao Zedong in On Contradiction is this: "External causes are the condition of change and internal causes are the basis of change, and external causes become operative through internal causes."

In Yalçıner's article, the destruction created by US embargoes and Israeli missiles in Iranian society is rightly brought to the fore; yet the dynamic of society's change and liberation is virtually reduced solely to the "external factor" (US aggression). Yet dialectical materialism shows us that:

  1. External Contradiction (US/Israeli Imperialism vs. Iranian State/People): Attack, bombing, and embargoes are the external condition that shakes the internal dynamics of Iranian society.

  2. Internal Contradiction (Iranian Proletariat vs. Iranian Theocratic Bourgeoisie): The essential dynamic that will determine the historical direction of Iranian society is the internal class contradiction within society's own body.

If internal contradictions are not taken into account, in the face of external attack the Iranian people are depicted as a passive victim and the Iranian state as the sole subject determining fate. Yet the destruction brought by imperialist bombardment (external condition) can turn into a historical and revolutionary leap only and solely to the extent that it sharpens the class struggle the Iranian working class wages against its own bourgeoisie (internal basis).

Distinguishing the Quality Between Fundamental Contradiction and Principal Contradiction

To prevent disorientation, the difference between Fundamental Contradiction and Principal Contradiction must be set out with dialectical clarity:

Universal Fundamental Contradiction: Labor – Capital

In the entire world and historical epoch in which the capitalist mode of production is in force, the fundamental contradiction is that between Social Production and Private Appropriation (Labor – Capital). This contradiction does not disappear so long as capitalism exists. Neither the technology monopolies of the US nor the holdings of Iran's Revolutionary Guards are outside this fundamental contradiction.

Conjunctural Principal Contradiction: Imperialist Aggression vs. Oppressed Nation

At a particular moment and in a concrete place, the form of expression of the fundamental contradiction may change. At the current moment of military escalation when the US and Israel are bombing Iranian territory and blockading the Strait of Hormuz, the principal contradiction at the regional level is: that between Imperialist Aggression and the Oppressed/Targeted Iranian People.

  • Dialectical Trap: Focusing on the principal contradiction while forgetting the fundamental contradiction (class struggle) leads to "social-chauvinism" (lining up behind the Mullahs); advancing the fundamental contradiction in an abstract manner while ignoring the conjunctural principal contradiction (imperialist bombardment) leads to "left-sectarianism" and left-liberalism. Marxist methodology rejects both of these errors.
Antagonistic and Non-Antagonistic Contradictions

The quality of contradictions determines the paths of resolution. Dialectical materialism distinguishes contradictions according to their degrees of irreconcilability:

  • Antagonistic (Irreconcilable) Contradictions: Their outcome is possible only through one side eliminating or overthrowing the other.

    • Example 1: US Imperialism vs. the Peoples of the World (Irreconcilable)

    • Example 2: Iranian Proletariat vs. Iranian Bourgeoisie/Mullah Regime (Irreconcilable)

  • Non-Antagonistic (Reconcilable/Interpenetrating) Contradictions: Contradictions that can change form within the process and be subject to temporary alliances or tactical withdrawals.

    • Example: Competition between US Imperialism and the China/Russia Imperialist Bloc. This is not an irreconcilable contradiction between two imperialist power centers, but a scramble for market share and hegemony.

Because the position of China and Russia in the process is not analyzed dialectically in Yalçıner's article, their contradiction with the US carries the risk of being perceived virtually as "an anti-imperialism in favor of the peoples of the world." Yet inter-imperialist contradictions are not antagonistic; they are market contradictions that are negotiable and based on repartitioning the world.

The Integral Matrix of Contradictions

We can examine with dialectical totality, through the matrix below, all the levels of contradiction intertwined in the Middle East and the Iran–US crisis, their agents, their qualities, and the revolutionary synthesis the Marxist-Leninist (CIPOML) line brings to these contradictions:

Level and Type of ContradictionContradictory Poles (Thesis / Antithesis)Quality of the ContradictionObjective Process and Material RealityRevolutionary Proletarian Attitude (Synthesis)
I. Universal / Historical (Fundamental Contradiction)Labor (Iranian and World Proletariat) vs. Capital (Global Finance Capital and Local Bourgeoisie)Antagonistic (Completely Irreconcilable)Capitalist surplus-value exploitation. Root cause of war, poverty, and crises.Full ideological, political, and organizational independence of the working class; Socialist Revolution.
II. III. Methodological Finding: Where Does Yalçıner's Dialectical Blockage Begin?

The fundamental blockage in Mustafa Yalçıner's text stems from his inability to establish the dialectical bond between Level III (Regional Principal Contradiction) and Level IV (Iran's Internal Class Contradiction) in the matrix tabulated above.

Yalçıner:

  1. Correctly exposes US aggression, yet while doing so, by listing the genealogy of capital owners (Jewish origin), slides into biological crude empiricism.

  2. While bringing forward the Level III contradiction (US vs. Iran), he virtually brushes aside the Level IV contradiction (Iranian working class vs. Mullah regime) as a secondary, unimportant detail.

  3. This situation opens the door to the formation in the reader of a right-opportunist perception that can be summarized as: "There is imperialist attack now, so it is not the time to discuss the class character of the Iranian regime."

Yet the dialectical method says that these contradictions exist at the same time, in interaction with one another. While US missiles are falling on Iran, the Iranian Mullah regime continues to arrest workers who take the factory out on strike. A revolutionary analysis must grasp the struggle to break the arm of American imperialism that launches the missiles and the struggle to tear out the liver of the theocratic bourgeoisie that flogs the worker in that factory as two inseparable parts of the same revolutionary strategy (Uninterrupted Revolution).

The dialectical matrix of contradictions shows us that the bloody conflicts unfolding in the world and the Middle East are neither religious/ethnic wars nor the personal madness of a few "reckless" leaders. What stands before us is the explosion point of the antagonistic contradictions monopoly capitalism has created at the global level.

While saluting the anticapitalist and anti-imperialist intentions in Mustafa Yalçıner's article, remaining methodologically faithful to dialectical materialism is not a luxury but a condition of revolutionary existence. Every analysis that cannot correctly classify contradictions, cannot distinguish the internal from the external, ethnicizes capital, and cannot clarify class independence ultimately carries the risk of becoming an indirect apparatus of bourgeois ideology. Revolutionary theory can reach victory with the dialectical materialist clarity that drives the scalpel into the very heart of contradictions.

The Call of the CIPOML Line and the Historical Task of the Turkish Proletariat

Mustafa Yalçıner's sincere anti-imperialist effort in Teori ve Eylem, his will to expose American banditry, and his endeavor to stand against the recklessness of Zionism are undoubtedly respectable. Yet historical materialism is measured not by the sincerity of intentions, but by the quality of method and by objective reality. Yalçıner's article has departed from the dialectical materialist method with its vulgar sociology that reduces capital to biological and ethnic identities, with its shallow process analysis that bypasses the dialectic of NATO 3.0, and with its floundering that cannot clarify the reactionary-bourgeois character of the Iranian Mullah regime.

The sole path out of this methodological blockage and theoretical floundering is the CIPOML (International Conference of Marxist-Leninist Parties and Organizations) line, which represents the steeled memory of the international communist movement. The CIPOML line resolutely rejects petty-bourgeois conspiracy theories that draw ethnic origin maps of capital. It lays bare the objective laws of operation of finance capital; it draws a principled, uncompromising, and independent proletarian line against right opportunism that tails the working class to Chinese and Russian imperialism or to local theocratic dictatorships with "multipolarity" fairy tales, and against left-liberalism that looks for salvation from NATO bombardments.

In this historical conjuncture, the attitude that Turkey's classes and the Turkish working class must take, standing right in the middle of the US–Iran conflict, carries an extremely clear, unshakable, and epic historical responsibility:

Proletariat of Anatolia and Thrace!

Your place is beside those whose lungs are torn out by the hunger for profit from the Küre Mountains to the Taurus, from the factories to the depths of the mines — beside your Iranian class siblings who perish under missiles in the Persian Gulf and who resist in the streets of Tehran against both American embargoes and Mullah whips!

Turkey's ruling classes and bourgeoisie, on the one hand, as loyal soldiers of NATO 3.0, place the İncirlik and Kürecik bases at the disposal of the American war machine and turn the covert and open trade wheels with Zionist Israel; on the other, they try to anesthetize the people's anti-imperialist anger with discourses of False Discord and chauvinism.

The attitude of the Turkish working class must be to smash to pieces this two-faced, sub-imperialist, and NATO-ist theater of its own rulers!

The enemy is not far away; the enemy is your own bourgeoisie, which has donned the armor of NATO 3.0, turned these lands into an aircraft carrier of American imperialism, and buried the laborer's surplus-value in the war industry! We must plant Karl Liebknecht's immortal banner here, in this geography: "The main enemy is at home!"

The Turkish proletariat will give neither a single vote nor a single round of applause to the bloody boots of the American occupiers and NATO bandits, nor will it feel mercy for the medieval darkness of the Iranian Mullah regime packaged as "anti-imperialism"!

Our historical task is to put a lock on the gates of İncirlik, to shut Kürecik in the face of imperialism, to cry out for immediate exit from NATO, and by breaking the wings of our own bourgeoisie to transform regional war into a class war against our own rulers!

Light will be born not from the colonialist missiles of the West or from the theocratic darkness of the East, but from the united, independent, reddened revolutionary will of the proletariat of Turkey, Iran, and the entire Middle East!
