At the great breaking points of history, the ruling classes have always manufactured new myths, false prophets, and tales of technological apocalypse/salvation in order to legitimize their decaying order and to pacify the awakening consciousness of the masses. This ideological opium, which yesterday cloaked itself as "divine providence" or "the invisible hand of the market," today confronts us as a glittering but hollow illusion radiating from the high-tech server rooms of Silicon Valley: the Technological Singularity.

The story whispered to us is utterly familiar: that mysterious moment when artificial intelligence will develop itself exponentially, surpass human intelligence, attain consciousness, and, in quotation marks, "determine the fate of humanity"... Bourgeois futurists and technology oligarchs present this hypothesis to the masses either as a final paradise (a utopia in which work has ended and everything flows in abundance) or as an inevitable apocalypse (a dystopia in which machines seize the world).

Elon Musk and the False Prophecies of the Techno-Oligarchy

One of the most favored apostles of this technological religion today is undoubtedly Elon Musk. In his recent interviews and the projections he offers the public, Musk peddles dreams that artificial intelligence will leave human intelligence completely behind, and that unemployment will be "not a problem but a natural consequence of a society of abundance." As can be seen clearly on the page A Critique of Elon Musk's Vision of the Future, these false prophets of capital construct technology as an autonomous "god" entirely isolated from class dynamics, property relations, and the wheels of exploitation.

This narrative presented by Musk and similar technology monopolists is, philosophically, a rigid idealism and commodity fetishism. The "future of abundance" offered to us is nothing but an ideological illusion designed so that we will not question who owns production.

Popular Science in Turkey and the Need for a "Class Perspective"

This global ideological offensive naturally finds a wide echo in our country as well. On the ground of youth's anxiety about the future, a deepening economic crisis, and the devaluation of skilled labor power, debates on the "technological singularity" are rapidly becoming popular in digital channels.

A concrete example of this appears in Bebar Bilim's Presentation on the Technological Singularity, which holds an important place in its field. We find extremely valuable the qualified effort and labor that well-intentioned ambassadors of science such as comrade Cengiz show in catching current developments and futuristic debates in the world and in opening horizons for youth. Yet our responsibility to intervene as dialectical-materialist philosophers begins precisely at this point.

The fundamental weakness into which science narrators and technology enthusiasts in our country fall is that they treat technology by abstracting it from the class ground on which it is produced, from property relations, and from the owner of the means of production. When we present a technological development or hypothesis as a "neutral scientific miracle," we unwittingly become legitimizers of Silicon Valley's ideological apparatuses.

Our basic expectation of sincere science publishers such as comrade Cengiz, and of all popular-science ambassadors who seek to catch the present, is that they bring a sharp "class perspective" to these questions. For what determines the direction of technology's development is not neurons, algorithms, and processor speeds alone; it is the profit drive of the capitalist class that holds that technology and relentless class struggle.

Dialectical Intervention: The Material Ground of Reality

When we set aside the illusions produced by the world of modern science and art and look at objective reality, what we see is this:

• Artificial-intelligence algorithms are not independent of the cobalt and lithium mines extracted by child laborers in the Global South.

• Vast data centers and artificial-intelligence models are built upon the non-consensual plunder of the collective knowledge and digital labor that humanity has produced over centuries.

• In Turkey and across the world, young software developers, architects, engineers, and artists are not being liberated by artificial-intelligence tools; on the contrary, they are rapidly being deskilled and transformed into cognitive proletarians.

Analysis of the Present: The Surge of the Productive Forces

The historical interval we inhabit today is a period in which the productive forces (artificial intelligence, advanced automation, quantum computing) are surging at a tremendous speed, yet this surge, colliding with the narrow molds of capitalist property relations, produces crises. Artificial intelligence is constructing the objective infrastructure that could free humanity from the shackles of the compulsory forty-hour workweek.

Yet this colossal technological capacity, in the hands of a handful of monopolist capitalists, is not an instrument that liberates humanity; on the contrary, it feeds:

1. The Devaluation of Cognitive Labor: The precarization of all mental laborers,

2. A Vast Army of the Unemployed: The "reserve army of industry" reaching historically unprecedented dimensions,

3. A Techno-Surveillance Society: A mechanism in which the masses are controlled through algorithms.

Therefore, when we take up the concept of the "Technological Singularity" philosophically, we must cry out this: The question is not whether machines "gain consciousness" or "destroy humanity." The question is the class conflict between the monopolist bourgeoisie that holds artificial intelligence and the billions of people who are being dispossessed, devalued, and proletarianized because of artificial intelligence.

Young comrades: we will surrender neither to a Luddite pessimism that dreams of returning to the past by smashing machines, nor to the bourgeois utopianism of capital's prophets such as Elon Musk, who promise that technology will spontaneously save us. What we need is to tear away the class veil over science and technique, and to expose the contradiction between dead and living labor behind the algorithms fetishized by capital.

The study we have prepared aims to offer a modest but unshakable dialectical contribution to precisely this historical task. Now let us smash, step by step, the philosophical illusions and the logic of capital behind this techno-wizardry.

PART 1: The Material Basis of the Singularity and Digital Commodity Fetishism

The greatest philosophical weakness of the techno-utopian discourses woven around artificial intelligence is that they idealize technology by severing it from matter, geography, and historical conditions. The ideologues of the ruling class present artificial intelligence to us almost as a "pure mind hanging in the air, disembodied." This process, covered by mystical concepts such as the "Cloud," in reality rests on a vast industrial infrastructure and relentless labor exploitation.

The dialectical-materialist approach rejects idealist daydreams and asks: What is the material basis of this technology?

The Illusion of the "Cloud" as a Denial of Matter

The algorithms that today claim the "Technological Singularity" are not divine sparks fallen from the sky. Artificial intelligence, if we speak in the language of Marxist political economy, is accumulated fixed capital (dead labor) on a vast scale.

The process we call a Large Language Model (LLM) "thinking" rests, in the material world, on the following concrete chain:

• Extractivism (Raw-Material Exploitation): The cobalt and lithium mines of the Global South, especially of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, under inhuman conditions.

• Heavy Industry and Production: The microprocessors (GPUs) produced by chip giants such as TSMC through enormous consumption of water and energy.

• Ecological Destruction and Energy: Vast data centers that consume the electricity and cooling water of a small city merely to answer a few of our questions.

Therefore, the narrative of a "self-creating autonomous artificial intelligence" is a philosophical fraud that renders this colossal industrial and ecological infrastructure invisible. The myth of the singularity transforms technology into a supra-historical power by making us forget its material roots.

Digital Commodity Fetishism: From the Table to the Algorithm

When Karl Marx explains commodity fetishism in the first volume of Capital, he gives the famous example of the table: A wooden table, so long as it is produced by human labor, is a simple, sensuous object. Yet once it enters the market as a "commodity," it suddenly acquires a mysterious quality; that it is a product of human labor is forgotten, and the relation among tables appears as an independent relation among the tables themselves.

Today this situation has reached its most radical dimension in the form of digital commodity fetishism:

1. The Plunder of Collective Labor: Artificial-intelligence models are trained through capital's non-consensual appropriation (data scraping) of all the written, visual, coded, and scientific accumulation humanity has produced over centuries (collective living labor).

2. Inversion: The data sequences and collective intelligence produced by human beings are severed from the human the moment they are transferred to the machine. The subject (the human) is objectified; the object (the algorithm) is subjectified and confronts humanity as a "creative, thinking, and ruling god."

3. The Completion of the Illusion: When young comrades today look at an artificial-intelligence output, they imagine they see not the sum of the past dead labor of billions of people, but "the miracle of an intelligent machine." What is eagerly fetishized is in reality humanity's own dispossessed intelligence.

The Invisible Visual and Cognitive Proletariat

The lie that artificial intelligence "learns by itself" covers the army of cheap labor that capital most conceals. The process of cleansing algorithms of hate speech, violence, and errors (RLHF — Reinforcement Learning from Human Feedback) is conducted with an exploitation that does not fall short of the darkest periods of the Industrial Revolution.

Without the workers of the "click farms" who are employed in Kenya, the Philippines, and India for one or two dollars an hour and forced to label thousands of traumatic contents, texts, and images a day, no artificial-intelligence model can function.

Dialectical materialism teaches us that capital is by nature "dead labor" and, like a vampire, lives only by sucking living labor. Debates on artificial intelligence and the singularity are the peak point of dead labor's domination over living labor.

We are living through this rupture not because machines have "gained consciousness," but because capital, by turning the human mind, creativity, and knowledge into a part of fixed capital, seeks to render the working class entirely superfluous. The real philosophical ground behind the singularity debate is capital's dream of absolutely excluding the human being from the production process.

Now that we have grasped this material ground, we may pass to Part 2 in order to smash, one by one, the conceptual distortions and sophistries invented by the ruling ideology to feed this fetishism.

PART 2: Conceptual Distortions and the Ideological Battlefield

Young comrades,

The ruling class monopolizes not only the productive forces and the means of production, but also language, concepts, and the means of mental production. As Marx and Engels state in The German Ideology: "The ideas of the ruling class are in every epoch the ruling ideas."

Today's high-technology capital order has created a vast conceptual mystification in language in order to sustain its own domination. The science-fiction industry, Hollywood dystopias, and academic chairs have united to set a linguistic and philosophical trap around artificial intelligence. Our task is to smash these traps of idealism and bourgeois epistemology one by one, and to decipher the class distortions in language.

Here are the fundamental conceptual distortions put on the market to cloud the minds of young comrades, and their dialectical-materialist analysis:

The Sophistry of Artificial "Consciousness" and "Awakening" (Animist Idealism)

The bourgeois media works the claim that Large Language Models (LLMs) or new-generation algorithms have "gained consciousness," "awakened," or "have emotions." Philosophically, this is a return to the most primitive form of idealism, namely animism (attributing a soul to inanimate objects).

• Idealist Illusion: It establishes an ontological identity between the human mind and the computer processor. It treats the mind merely as a mechanism of "information processing."

• Dialectical Reality: Human consciousness is a product of biological and social practice (praxis). Human consciousness is formed within historical relations, the struggle to transform the objective world, sensations, and the social labor process. An algorithm, by contrast, is merely a complex series of mathematical functions that match statistical data patterns (pattern matching). The algorithm has no "understanding" or "feeling"; there are only probability calculations in the data pool loaded onto it by capital. What is "conscious" is not the algorithm, but the capitalist class that has it coded for the production of profit.

The Fairy Tale of "Humanity vs. Machines" (Terminator and Dystopia Ideology)

Popular culture presents the conflict that will break out with the development of artificial intelligence as an "ontological war between the human species and Machines."

• Idealist Illusion: By reducing the enemy to an abstract "machine intelligence," it renders the class agents invisible.

• Dialectical Reality: The destruction that will be lived in the future will not come from a robot rebelling against humanity, but from the capitalist who owns the robot/algorithm condemning the masses to hunger, unemployment, and a digital surveillance prison by using that algorithm. The conflict is not between Human and Machine; it is between the monopolist bourgeoisie that holds the machine and the proletarian masses harmed by the machine. This fairy tale is an ideological curtain drawn over class struggle.

Transhumanism and the Lie of Universal Salvation

Another poison of Silicon Valley's ideologues is "Transhumanism." This current promises that through artificial intelligence, genetic engineering, and biotechnology, the human being will surpass biological limits, become immortal, and be "equalized."

• Idealist Illusion: It claims that technology will spontaneously liberate all of humanity independently of social property relations.

• Dialectical Reality: In an order dominated by private property, technological developments do not provide a "universal" improvement; on the contrary, they deepen the class gulf. While private ownership of the means of production continues, transhumanist technologies create a Techno-Feudalism in which the rich become biologically and mentally superior and the poor are turned into a "superfluous/worthless population." No technological advance not won through class struggle offers the people a human life.

The Mythology of "Neutral Data" and "Algorithmic Rationality"

It is claimed that algorithms take neutral, objective decisions purified of human weaknesses (in hiring, credit assessment, judicial processes).

• Idealist Illusion: By declaring the neutrality of mathematics and code, it turns algorithmic decisions into "divine truths" closed to debate.

• Dialectical Reality: Data are the frozen social relations of the past. Because artificial intelligence is trained on the past data of a society that is racist, sexist, and class-unequal, it is programmed to reproduce the ruling ideology, relations of exploitation, and prejudices. The algorithm is the interests of the ruling class translated into the language of mathematics.

To disperse this fog that the ruling class has created in language is the first condition of revolutionary theory. Every approach that sees artificial intelligence as a "god" or an "Antichrist" is idealist, mystical, and in consequence reactionary.

We are neither bourgeois modernists who "worship every new technology," nor reactionary Luddites who "want to smash the machines with an axe." We are materialists who see the human labor accumulated inside those machines and who question in whose control those machines stand.

PART 3: The Dialectical Contradiction: The Surge of the Productive Forces and the Shackles of the Relations of Production

Young comrades!

We now pass to the most essential, toughest, and most relentless point of the matter: the inner laws of political economy and dialectics.

The charlatans of Silicon Valley and bourgeois economists present artificial intelligence as the final victory of capital's capacity for endless expansion. What they tell us is this: "Machines will produce everything, efficiency will reach infinity, and the system will become perfect." Yet the dialectical method teaches us that every system, at the highest point of its own development, ripens the deepest contradiction that will destroy it.

The phenomenon called the "Technological Singularity" is not a metaphysical prophecy; it is the point at which capitalism, by running up against the logical limit of its own inner logic (the profit drive), destroys itself.

Capital's Logical Suicide: The Explosion of Organic Composition

Marx, in Capital, divides the structure of capital in two:

• Constant Capital (c): Buildings, raw materials, machines, chips, and algorithms (dead labor).

• Variable Capital (v): The wages paid to the working class, that is, living labor-power.

The organic composition of capital is the ratio of these two (c/v). Capitalist competition forces every individual boss to employ fewer workers and invest more in technology. The aim is to lower the cost of living labor and to get ahead of rivals. The process of artificial intelligence and advanced automation leaps this ratio to an astronomical level unprecedented in history: while c grows at a tremendous speed, v (that is, the share paid to the worker) is driven toward zero.

Here capitalism's fatal impasse begins: Surplus-value (s) is obtained only and solely from living labor (v). The machine transfers its own value into production but creates no new value.

When Marx's discovered Law of the Tendency of the Rate of Profit to Fall is expressed as an equation:

p′ = s / (c + v)

If you completely expel living labor (v) from the production process, the production of surplus-value (s) dries up. As capital, in its short-term greed for excess profit, replaces living labor with artificial intelligence, in the long term it is cutting the main artery that feeds it. Vast processor farms and perfect algorithms do not create surplus-value; they are merely the frozen remnants of past living labor.

The Crisis of the Non-Realization of Value and the Illusion of "Universal Basic Income"

Suppose the transformation in production is complete and the bourgeoisie, through artificial intelligence, has begun to produce unlimited quantities of commodities (software, medical services, industrial products, design) at near-zero cost. A dialectical wall confronts us: Who will buy these commodities?

• Billions of people thrown out of work, dispossessed, unpaid (workers, engineers, artists, lawyers) cannot exist as consumers in the market.

• Production reaches a tremendous level of abundance, yet value cannot be "realized" (that is, sold).

• Capital suffocates upon the vast digital commodity stock it holds. This is a radical and insoluble stage of the capitalist crisis of overproduction.

Because bourgeois ideologues sense this systemic collapse, they have begun in panic to market palliative solutions such as Universal Basic Income (UBI). They present this to us as "technological humanism."

Yet looked at dialectically, Universal Basic Income is:

• Without changing property relations (the monopolist ownership of artificial intelligence),

• By distributing alms to the people severed from the value they produce,

• An artificial respirator that enables them to buy again the commodities capital produces.

The aim is not to liberate the human being, but to protect the system from collapse and to keep the masses in absolute dependence and passivity.

The Singularity: The Threshold at Which the Class Shell Cracks

That moment which bourgeois futurists mystify by calling it the "Singularity" is, philosophically, nothing other than this: the necessity that the level reached by the productive forces (artificial intelligence, automation, quantum computing) burst the shell of the existing relations of production (private property, the market, wage labor, the nation-state).

This incompatibility between the productive forces and the relations of production is history's greatest antagonistic (irreconcilable) contradiction.

The artificial-intelligence revolution is the most powerful technical instrument digging capitalism's grave. It is preparing the objective infrastructure that could reduce humanity's necessary labor-time to two or three hours a day, wipe scarcity from the face of the earth, and make qualified education and health free.

Yet so long as this colossal potential remains in the hands of a handful of technology monopolies (Microsoft, Google, Nvidia, etc.), it will bring the masses not liberation but digital slavery, dispossession, and devaluation.

The moment of the singularity is not the moment of the machines' awakening; it is that historical moment of trial in which humanity must seize its own fate by wrenching the means of production from the hands of capital.

PART 4: The Proletarianization of Cognitive Labor and New Class Dynamics

Young comrades!

Capitalism has throughout history resorted to tactics of dividing the working class in order to prevent the development of class consciousness. The artificial line drawn since the Industrial Revolution between manual labor (blue-collar workers) and mental labor (white-collar workers) has been one of the bourgeoisie's most useful ideological shields. The illusion has been sold to engineers, software developers, artists, academics, and designers that "you are not workers; you are privileged mental laborers"; they have been fed the lie that they are owners of "human capital."

Yet today, with the artificial-intelligence process, this false illusion is being thrown into history's dustbin. The artificial-intelligence revolution is the radical and mass proletarianization of cognitive labor.

Algorithmic Taylorism: The Deskilling of Mental Labor

Just as the master weavers of nineteenth-century England were transformed by the arrival of industrial machines into unskilled factory workers pulling a single lever, so today software developers, graphic designers, translators, and copywriters face a similar process of "Algorithmic Taylorism."

• Deskilling (De-skilling): For the bourgeoisie, skilled labor is always expensive labor. Artificial intelligence breaks complex mental processes that require years of education and accumulation (writing code, analyzing legal texts, designing visuals, making medical diagnoses) into pieces, pours them into algorithmic patterns, and simplifies them.

• The Illusion of "Prompt Engineering": What is today polished in the bourgeois media as "the profession of the future"—prompt engineering (the work of giving commands to artificial intelligence)—is philosophically nothing other than the reduction of intellectual labor to its lowest level. This is the seating of mental production on the assembly line.

• The Devaluation of Labor: As complex mental work is rendered ordinary, the value of the labor-power that performs that work ($v$) falls rapidly. A software developer or architect who has worn out elbows for years completely loses bargaining power before an artificial-intelligence model that does the same work with a single button today.

The Digital Reserve Army of Industry

Karl Marx showed that capitalism always needs a reserve army of industry (a mass of the unemployed) in order to press down wages and keep workers docile. Artificial intelligence is expanding the quality and scale of this reserve army on a global dimension.

The threat once created by the unemployed waiting at the factory gate today hangs over the working class as the threat of "the algorithm that will take your place" or "another precarious employee who will use this algorithm at half the price."

1. The Invisible Cognitive Proletariat: A vast class of "digital precarious" (the gig economy) has been created, stretching from Uber drivers to food couriers, from content moderators to click workers who label artificial-intelligence data.

2. Capital's Absolute Discipline: The boss now gives the white-collar employee this message: "If you do not accept the working conditions and low wage I want, with the Large Language Model in my hand and a few interns I will do in an hour the work you do in a week."

The Dialectical Collapse of the Duality of Mental and Manual Labor

Dialectical materialism teaches us that objects and classes are not frozen categories, but exist in constant flow and transformation. Artificial intelligence, by abolishing the historical separation between mental labor and manual labor, prepares the objective ground for the unification of the working class.

The differences between a manual worker packing in an Amazon warehouse and a software developer writing code from nine to six at a technology company are rapidly melting. Both:

• Do not own the means of production (servers, code libraries, logistics networks).

• Are supervised by the same algorithmic surveillance and performance systems.

• Are equally substitutable and expendable before capital's profit drive.

While capital tries to bring cognitive labor into line by using artificial intelligence as a whip, it unwittingly feeds revolutionary dynamics. The "middle-class" fantasies of white-collar workers are collapsing, and it is becoming clear that the privileges the system offers are illusions.

If today engineers are beginning to unionize, if screenwriters and graphic artists are organizing strike waves against artificial-intelligence exploitation, this is concrete proof of how the productive forces necessarily awaken class consciousness.

Capital is equalizing mental labor and manual labor within the same wheel of exploitation. The task of us revolutionary Marxists is to grasp this equalization not as an occasion for despair, but as the objective condition for the unification of all laborers on a single class front against capital.

Not the Rebellion of Machines, but the Power of the Producers

Young comrades!

As we come to the end of this philosophical and dialectical reckoning we have conducted with capital's ideological apparatuses, the burning question before us is this: What Is to Be Done?

Silicon Valley's modern priesthood wants to condemn the masses to two false options:

1. Either we will be passive Transhumanists/Capital Worshippers who load every new algorithmic step with a religious meaning and believe that technology will spontaneously save humanity,

2. Or we will be helpless Luddites (Machine Breakers) who fear technology, curse machines, and dream of returning to the primitive forms of production of the past.

Dialectical materialism resolutely rejects both of these idealist traps.

• Luddism (Hostility to Machines) Is Idealist: Because it sees the source of evil in the object (the means of production/the algorithm). Yet the guilty party is not the machine; it is the order of private property that uses the machine to crush living labor and seize surplus-value.

• Transhumanism (Techno-Utopia) Is Idealist: Because it abstracts technology from the relations of production and from class struggle. Without resolving class conflict, without changing property relations, it tells the lie that "everyone will be liberated."

"General Intellect" and the Material Possibility of Communism

Karl Marx, in the text of the Grundrisse, makes a dazzling foresight: with the development of capitalism, social knowledge, science, and technology become the fundamental force of production. Marx names this the "General Intellect."

The artificial-intelligence revolution is precisely the historical manifestation of this "General Intellect." Humanity's collective accumulation has been transformed through algorithmic systems into a colossal productive force.

Capital threatens humanity by taking this force into its own monopoly. Yet the dialectical contradiction lies precisely here: Artificial intelligence in the hands of capitalism is an instrument of crisis and repression; yet when wrenched from the hands of capital, it is the objective condition of communism (a society of abundance).

The technological infrastructure that could reduce necessary labor-time to two or three hours a day, wipe scarcity and poverty from the face of the earth, and free the human being from drudgery to give them the chance of self-realization now exists. What is lacking is not technology; it is the revolutionary political will that will socialize that technology.

Three Paths of the Future

In the light of our historical-materialist analysis, we may summarize the three possible futures that will shape the coming period as follows:

A Call to Comrades: Class Consciousness in the Algorithmic Age

Young comrades!

Leave to the bourgeoisie the magazine pop-science and hollow philosophical debates over whether machines will "gain consciousness" or "awaken." Our question is clear, definite, and philosophical:

In whose ownership will those server rooms, those microprocessors, those vast data centers, and those algorithms remain?

The future need not be a Terminator nightmare in which machines enslave humanity, as the propaganda of the rulers would have it. The future will begin on the day we wrench artificial intelligence and advanced technology from the hands of the monopolist bourgeoisie and make them the common property of humanity.

• The blue-collar industrial worker and the cognitive laborer who insecurely writes code, designs, and produces text at a screen share the same class fate.

• Without enmity toward technology, but building the class consciousness that will stop technology from being a whip in the hands of capital, is our most urgent task.

Machines will not rebel, because they have no consciousness. Yet when the producers who see the dead labor and living exploitation behind the machines take power, technology will for the first time enter the real service of humanity.

Liberation lies not in an algorithmic miracle, but in organized, conscious, and dialectical class struggle!
